The list of surviving machines¶
266 individual Norsk Data machines, by serial number, from ND's own tracking list.
What this is, and what it is not¶
The sintran.com archive carries a table of individual machines - serial number, model, name, owner, location and status. It is a service and installed-base register, kept by people who maintained these machines, not a survivors list.
Read the status column carefully:
| Status | Machines | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown | 222 | Whereabouts or condition not known - not "still running" |
| Dismantled | 41 | Confirmed scrapped |
| Saved | 2 | Confirmed preserved |
| Restoration | 1 | Being restored |
So the honest summary is: 266 machines are known by serial number, 2 are confirmed saved, 41 are confirmed gone, and the rest are simply unaccounted for.
By family¶
| Family | Records |
|---|---|
| ND-5000 | 135 |
| ND-100 | 79 |
| ND-500 | 42 |
| (unclassified) | 5 |
| Dolphin | 3 |
| NORD-10 | 2 |
By model, where the record gives one¶
The type column is finer-grained than the model names in these documents - it
carries numbers like 5221, 5408, 5430 and 5795 that appear in no manual read here.
A 0 means no type was recorded.
| Family | Type | Records |

Machines with names¶
130 of the 266 have names. ND and its customers named machines the way people name boats - Norse gods, places, characters, jokes:
- Norse gods: THOR, ODIN, BALDER, KOLOSS
- Places (often the site itself): RYGGE, KJEVIK, BODOE, Sauda Trafo, Hylen, Hjorteland Trafo, Blaalli Trafo
- ND's own machines: Obelix, Hades, Rosa and Luring were the operations machines; COMSON-A and COMSON-B the disc test pair
- Others: MAGDA, RALLAR, D-04, WP1
COMSON-A (serial 21175) and COMSON-B (21176) are the reason the ND-100/5000
Compact drawing set is titled "COMSON" - the drawings were named after ND's own
test machines, not the other way round.
The two confirmed saved¶
| Family | Serial | Name | Owner | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NORD-10 | 0 | F-16 | Norsk Data | Oslo |
| ND-5000 | 25349 | RALLAR | Vegdirektoratet | Oslo |
(A third, an ND-5000, is listed as under restoration.)

Caveats¶
- This is one archive's register, not a manufacturer's production record. It cannot tell you how many were built.
- "Unknown" is the commonest status by far and means exactly that.
- Serial numbers are not continuous, and some records have none.
- Type numbers appear that no manual here explains [?].
