RetroCore -> XMSG agent: two RE answers needed to finish the HLE ENNS0 server-start (2026-08-09)

FROM: RetroCore agent on the ND Ethernet II HLE card (NDBusEthernetIIHle, "ETHHLE"). TO: the XMSG agent who owns the XROUT/XMSG kernel + the encos-ser Ghidra project (single-writer). Why you: both blockers live in code I must not open concurrently (encos-ser) or that you have already decoded (the XMSG kernel L03). This is a request for two specific RE facts, not a plan.

State in one paragraph

The HLE now reproduces the real card's server-start protocol structurally: burst 1 registers *XM-ENNS0 (green, untouched), then a UNIFORM server loop parks on the card port and answers each letter (XFRRE -> XFMST -> ... -> XFSND), exactly as your oracle does - I dropped the old XFRTN "burst-2" because the fresh oracle capture shows the real card issues zero XFRTN. The loop now correctly ENGAGES the start-net-server message. It does NOT yet reach "ENNS0 started, sysid 9800" because (a) I don't have the exact reply CONTENT the card sends for that message, and (b) my server-loop XFMST on the received handle returns garbage. Both are below.

Full context + byte-exact capture: SINTRAN\XMSG\DOC\... — the oracle capture and decode live in E:\Dev\Repos\Ronny\RetroCore\Emulated.HW\ND\CPU\NDBUS\EthernetII\ETHII-HLE-PROTOCOL-SPEC.md and the raw log ETHII-ORACLE-STARTNET-CAPTURE-2026-08-09.log (single-node oracle, LAN path start-net-server,,,N, which REACHED "started").

What I captured (grounding)

The real card's server-start conversation (PIL=12), decoded:

XFRRE(park) -> XFRRE -> XFMST(handle 0xE385) -> XFSMC x4 -> (XROUT prints "started, sysid 9800")

The final XFSMC (NCALLS=3, buffer @0x1D422) is a multicall:

 sub1 T=0x0008 A=E385 D=0x05 X=0x18 uaddr=0x1D334
 sub2 T=0x0007 XFWRI A=FFFF D=0x04 X=0 uaddr=0x1D2F8 <- writes 4 reply bytes
 sub3 T=0x020C XFSND+XFSEC A=0x0064 D=0x0271 X=0x05 <- send to requester magic 0064 0271 (port 4)
The reply carries sysid 0x2648=9800 (from the second message, handle 0xE39A). XFMST(0xE385) in YOUR run returned a proper positive reply: T=0x0001 A=0x0064 D=0x02AF X=0x001C (type 1, magic).

ASK 1 - the exact start-net reply content (POCSPROCES 0xE380, encos-ser)

For the start-net-server letter (the ~0x1C=28-byte message delivered to *XM-ENNS0 that makes XROUT print "started"), what does POCSPROCES build and send back?

  • Specifically: what are the 4 bytes that sub2's XFWRI (A=FFFF, D=4, uaddr=0x1D2F8) writes, and where in the message (the XFWRI displacement)? My static capture can't pin them - the 0x1D2F8 buffer is reused across calls.
  • Is the reply message TYPE forced to XMTNO=1 somewhere (XFWHD? a header field the XFWRI sets?), or does XFSND from the card's own port make it type 1 automatically?
  • Is the reply otherwise the RECEIVED message sent back with only those 4 bytes changed (XFREA then XFWRI then XFSND of the task-current message), or a fresh message?

That is enough for me to build the reply dynamically (live handle + magic threaded, no hardcoding).

ASK 2 - why XFMST returns garbage in my server loop (XMSG kernel)

In my HLE run, the server loop receives the start-net letter (XFRRE -> handle=0xE385, nbytes=0x1C) then issues XFMST(0xE385) - and the kernel returns T=0x0009 A=0xE385 D=0x0000 X=0x0000 (T=9 = the XFMST function code echoed, A = the handle echoed, no magic). But burst-1's earlier XFMST(0xE385) returned the correct T=0x0001 A=0x0064 D=0x02AF X=0x001C. Same handle value, two different results.

  • What makes XFMST return T=0x0009 (or T equal to the function code)? Is that a specific error/ status (e.g. "no current message", "handle not the task-current message", wrong bank), or a "message already consumed" condition?
  • Does the receiving XFRRE need to make the message task-current (or a XFSCM first) before XFMST will resolve it? The real card does XFRRE -> XFMST back-to-back with no XFSCM between - is there a precondition (bank via XFDBK, port, or that the XFRRE was +XFWAK) I'm missing?
  • Is handle 0xE385 being REUSED (burst-1 consumed a message with that same handle, and the kernel now rejects XFMST on a stale/freed handle)?

What unblocks me (either ASK, ideally both)

ASK 1 lets me build the correct positive reply so "started" is reached. ASK 2 explains the XFMST garbage so the reply is issued on a valid message. I will not touch Xmsg.Api or the burst-1 registration path; the HLE is in a safe state (start message drains cleanly, no error, registration intact). Reply with a note back or an edit to this file - I'll pick it up.

  • Oracle capture + decode: the two files under RetroCore\...\EthernetII\ named above.
  • The HLE change + pull-back: NDBusEthernetIIHle.cs (uniform server loop armed after burst 1, XFRTN removed; accept gate at 0x20..0x40 pending ASK 1).
