DOCUMENTATION CATALOGUE

Introduction

1 INTRODUCTION

This catalogue describes the documentation available to users of Norsk Data computer systems. All manuals in this catalogue can be ordered from the ND Publications Office. A list of available documentation, their version number and price, is published every month in the Customer Support Information (CSI) document. This catalogue is published twice every year.

1.1 DOCUMENTATION CATEGORIES

The various types of documentation have been placed in categories and the relationships between them indicated. The most common categories relate to the subject covered (subject matter), the type of reader the documentation is intended for (reader audience) and the way the subject matter is presented (document type). Document type and reader audience categories are often closely related.

1.1.1 SUBJECT MATTER

Documentation is usually divided according to the subject being covered. The main division is into hardware and software, with hardware being further subdivided into different types of hardware. A third division exists for documentation covering a combination of hardware and software or other subjects. A fourth division is used for the numbering of reference cards. The Norsk Data documentation numbering system reflects this division to some extent. This numbering system is described in section 1.1.1.1.

Page 12

1.1.1.1 NORSK DATA'S DOCUMENTATION NUMBERING SYSTEM

The numbering system for Norsk Data documentation consists of three numbers, as follows:

Introduction

1.1.1.3 REVISIONS AND VERSIONS

Documentation is updated by means of revisions and new versions.

Revisions consist of one or more single pages which the reader inserts into the old document. Each revised page is listed on the new printing record which accompanies the revision. The old printing record should be replaced by the new one. Revisions are used to correct small errors in the documentation or to document small changes in the product. Revisions are indicated by letters, such as REV.A.

New versions consist of a complete, new, replacement document. They incorporate all revisions since the previous version. The printing record shows all old versions and revisions, and the new version number. They are issued when changes to a document involve more than a few minor revisions. Versions are indicated by a number, such as version 7 for this document.

1.1.1.4 LANGUAGE VERSION SUFFIX

The language suffix consists of a two-letter abbreviation in uppercase, and will always be the last part of the document number.

The language version suffix will be coded like this:

Abbreviation Language
EN English
NO Norwegian
SW Swedish
GE German
FR French
DA Danish

Documentation that presently exists in an English and a Norwegian version under two different numbers will not receive new numbers. Chapter 3 of this manual gives a complete description of all user documentation available for Norsk Data computer systems. The various language versions available will be given in the document's description.

1.1.2 Reader Audience

Most readers belong to one or more of the following groups:

Role Description
Managers Managers are usually interested in gaining an overview of a product to decide if it is of interest and, if so, how the company can best profit from it. Detailed technical descriptions are usually of less interest.
End Users These are users of computer-based systems, who are not computer professionals. They do not write programs themselves but need instructions on how to use them. End users should also be given an overview in order to understand the general design of the system.
Application Programmers These programmers have a general knowledge of computer systems and how to program them, but may have little knowledge of the particular programming system in use. They require detailed instructions on how to program using this system.
System Programmers System programmers are able to make changes to the system itself. They must be given detailed information on how to program the system and how to implement changes to it.
System Supervisors A system supervisor has a fairly deep knowledge of a system and is able to do such things as configure the system, make necessary changes to it and correct more difficult error situations. System supervisors usually have the main responsibility for a system and must be given detailed information about it.
Operators Operators are responsible for the daily operation of a computer system. They need to know how to start and stop the system, how to keep the system running correctly and how to correct simple errors.
Service Service personnel must be able to locate and repair errors. This requires an understanding of error messages and symptoms, diagnostic tools, error removal procedures, etc. Service is generally carried out by Norsk Data employees, but some service documentation is also available to customers.

Introduction

1.1.3 DOCUMENT TYPE

The kind of information being presented determines the type of document and how it is structured. This often depends on the intended audience.

Type Description
Introductory Information This type of information contains a general functional description of a system, highlighting the main features. Brief technical details may be presented and hardware and software requirements mentioned. It is written for all types of users. It may be the only type of documentation necessary for managers whereas other users may read it before going on to more detailed documentation.
Reference Documentation Reference documentation presents a concentrated and formal explanation of a product. This includes all information needed to fully understand the use of a system, and detailed descriptions of all the features and facilities available to the user. Reference documentation lists and explains all commands, parameters, limitations and restrictions, errors, traps, etc. It contains information needed to use all options and should be structured so that it is easy to find information quickly. Such documentation is mainly intended for experienced users who require detailed knowledge of a system, who need to know the precise syntax of a command and its parameters, the precise meaning of an error message, and so forth.
Reference Cards Reference cards are designed for experienced users who want quick reference to technical details and do not need any accompanying explanation. The cards contain condensed lists of commands, statements, calls, and instructions. Parameters should also be included plus any other pertinent information.
Tutorial Documentation The purpose of tutorial documentation is to teach the reader about a new system. It should tell the reader what the system can be used for, how to start or call the system, and how to use it step-by-step. It should contain meaningful examples of commands and facilities and hints on likely mistakes the user may make. It should describe error messages, probable causes for them, and methods for correcting the errors.

Norsk Data ND-40.004.7 EN

Page 16

Introduction

It may also contain suggestions on how to make best use of the system. This documentation is written mainly for new users of a system.

"How to Use" Documentation

This type of documentation is to instruct, not inform the reader about using the system. It should contain "cookbook" type procedures telling how to start or call the system, and how to use it, explained step-by-step. It should describe error messages, causes and corrections. It may also contain suggestions on how to make the best use of the system, but this should be brief. This documentation should be as concentrated as possible and not contain any superfluous information. However, examples of the use of the procedures should be included. "How to Use" documentation is written for users who need to know how to use a system, but who don't need to understand much of the logic of it.

Operating Documentation

This documentation is written specifically for operators and supervisors, i.e. those responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance of a system. It contains the information necessary to carry out these system tasks: how to load and start, how to protect and restart, how to run jobs, etc. Error situations and messages should be described in detail. It may also contain information for supervisors, such as defining the user's configuration, ordering and installing the system, making limited changes to it, handling serious error situations and correcting errors in the system on the basis of information received from program maintenance.

Maintenance Documentation

This documentation is written specifically for service personnel. It contains the information necessary to identify and repair errors in the field, either by correcting the error or by replacing the unsatisfactory component.

Internal Logic Documentation

This shows the internal construction of a hardware or software product. It provides a detailed description of implementation, giving the reader comprehensive understanding and possibly the ability to modify the product. Internal logic documentation is written for supervisors and system programmers who need a general knowledge of a system.

1.2 THE MANUAL PREFACE

The preface helps the reader decide if this manual is relevant to his/her current needs. It contains the following information:

  1. Identification of the product(s) documented in the manual, their ND or PD number and version number.

  2. Definition of the reader audience.

  3. What the reader should know before reading the manual, in order to understand it fully, and in which other manuals such information may be found.

  4. A brief description of the manual's contents and structure and suggestions on how to use it.

  5. A list of related manuals, how they are related and a recommended reading order where applicable.

  6. Changes from the previous version, if the manual is an update.

1.3 ORDERING MANUALS

Customers receiving new hardware or software products, or new versions of them, will automatically receive the relevant documentation, so it is unnecessary to order this separately.

However, users wanting additional manuals, or documentation for other products, can order these directly from Norsk Data. If a manual is updated with a revision or a new version, this will not be automatically sent out to those with the old manual, but must be ordered separately. New revisions and versions are announced in the Customer Service Information (CSI) document which is published monthly.

All manuals can be ordered from the local Norsk Data office or (in Norway) from:

2.3.2 Compilers, Monitors and Loaders

Figures 5 and 6 show the compiler, monitor and loader documentation available for the different CPUs. The NORD-10 and ND-100 are completely software compatible, whereas the NORD-50 and ND-500 need special compilers and loaders. The NORD-50 and ND-500 also use special monitors under SINTRAN III; these are not necessary for the NORD-10 and ND-100.

Some of the compiler documentation can be used for both ND-100/10 and ND-500 compilers, as shown in figure 6.

NORSK DATA GLOSSARY

This glossary is intended to help in understanding ND manuals and should be of interest to everybody using ND equipment. Special ND terms and common computer terms with a slightly different meaning in the ND manuals, constitute the main portion of the glossary. ND abbreviations are also listed. Some general computer terms, words and acronyms used in the documentation are explained, mainly to help readers with limited data processing background in understanding the introductory manuals. Terms and abbreviations used only in the same chapter, or close to their definitions, are omitted. The main purpose of this glossary however, is not to define, but to explain in everyday language. Many explanations in this glossary require little or no knowledge of computers or data processing. However, some knowledge of computers is essential to the understanding of the more complicated explanations.

Updating

The information in this manual is subject to change without notice. Norsk Data A.S assumes no responsibility for any errors that may appear in this manual. Norsk Data A.S assumes no responsibility for the use or reliability of its software on equipment that is not furnished or supported by Norsk Data A.S. Copyright 1986 by Norsk Data A.S

Manuals can be updated in two ways, new versions and revisions. New versions consist of a completely new manual which replaces the old one, and incorporate all revisions since the previous version. Revisions consist of one or more single pages to be merged into the manual by the user, each revised page being listed on the new printing record sent out with the revision. The old printing record should be replaced by the new one.

New versions and revisions are announced in the ND Customer Support Information and can be ordered from the address below.

The reader's comments form at the back of this manual can be used both to report errors in the manual and to give an evaluation of the manual. Both detailed and general comments are welcome.
