LOADING/OPERATING PROCEDURE¶
Read this installation procedure carefully before performing the installation! An installation sample is given.
The loading of a new version of NOTIS-WP is fairly simple. You will be guided through the installation by self-explanatory questions asked by a program called INSTALL-WP.
SINTRAN requirements:¶
- Sintran version H or later is required.
- Sintran must have been generated with the XON/XOFF option.
- It must be possible to use break and echo strategy no. 7 (user defined strategies). This is the default when generating a new version of Sintran.
- The background segment size must be set to 128 pages on each of the terminals on which you wish to run NOTIS-WP.
- The terminal file must be called TERMINAL. If this is not so, use the Sintran command @SET-TERMINAL-FILE "TERMINAL" from user System.
- The total required space on the segment files is 189 pages (275 octal) + 63 (77 octal) for each additional language.
The four contiguous areas that are required must be at least 64, 62, 48 and 15 pages. Each additional language requires two contiguous areas of 48 and 15 pages. To find out how much space is available, use the RT-LOADER command DUMP-SEGFILE-BITMAP,.... This gives you the total number of pages and the number of contiguous pages available (in octal).
If you have either Philips GP-300 L (ND-408/410) or Epson-MX80 (NO-423) printers, you must ensure that XON/XOFF communications protocol has been set both in Sintran and on the printers.
Changing Sintran version:¶
If NOTIS-WP is being installed under Sintran version H, and you change to version I at a later time, the installation procedure must be performed once more. This second time you should specify that you wish to make changes to the current installation (answer C to the question "Install or Change" (See sample)). This is only necessary when going from version H to version I of Sintran.
Memory requirements:¶
In the most difficult work situations (big documents, lots of searching/substitutions, heavy text formatting), NOTIS-WP requires 64K words of memory + 36K words per simultaneous user. During normal use, the requirements are 25K words + 20K words.
Page 10¶

Disk space requirements¶
NOTIS-WP uses the scratch-files under user SCRATCH for temporary storage of documents during editing. The space requirements for user SCRATCH are approximately:
[ 2 + \frac{28 * N}{750} ] L pages per region.
- 'N' = Average number of characters per line of text
- 'L' = Average number of lines per region
Installation Requirements¶
Before the installation can take place, there are a few things that need to be done:
- Make sure that the standard program FMAC is available as a reentrant subsystem or as a :PROG version under user SYSTEM.
- Check that user SYSTEM has at least 210 unused pages (+ 130 per additional language) and space for at least 12 new files (+ 4 per additional language).
Note: Each user may have a maximum of 256 files per directory.
- Determine a user for the :BPUN files (normally used: 8PUN-FILES) and check that this user has at least 200 unused pages on his default directory (+ 70 for each additional language) and space for at least 4 new files (+ 2 per additional language).
- Ascertain that user SYSTEM has default directory access to this user's files in order to give SYSTEM the right to create new :BPUN files.
-
Ascertain that the following files do NOT exist on user SYSTEM's default directory:
INSTALL-WP:COM INSTALL-WP:TEMP XCOM:PROG
Page 11¶

- Ascertain that your version of Sintran has the background segment size set to 128 pages with the aid of the command
ØCHANGE-BACKGROUND-SEGMENT-SIZEused for each terminal on which you wish to run NOTIS-WP (if this is not done already). These commands should also be inserted in the HENT-MODE file. (It is a Sintran option to have the background segment size set to 128 pages at system generation time. In Sintran-III/VSE, VSE-500, VSX and VSX-500 versions, this is the default size).
- Make sure that no-one is using the RT-LOADER during this installation.
- Make sure that no-one is using any versions of NOTIS-WP or NOTIS-TF during the installation. Everybody must exit from WP/TF and enter another subsystem or log out of the system in order to release the necessary segments.
The startup-time of NOTIS-WP will be shorter for one particular terminal type, the default type (recommended TV 2200/9 or Facit 4420). This terminal type may be determined during the installation. The installation procedure should be performed from a terminal of this type. If you want the installation procedure to be printed on paper, you have to run it from a hard-copy terminal. This will usually work fine, but the terminal type dependent output may look strange.
Note: In addition to the usual reentrant segment, NOTIS-WP requires two consecutive segments on the segment files. You will be prompted for the first one of these during the installation. If NOTIS-WP is already installed, the same segments should be used again unless you wish to run the old and the new version in parallel. The old segment numbers will be found in the DUMP-REENTRANT file. (They are the ones appearing in the CLEAR-SEGMENT commands to the RT-LOADER). During the installation you will be asked for one of the segments. For your own memory and later reference, write the first segment number here:
The first segment number used is (octal): 220
To install NOTIS-WP:¶
Ascertain that user SYSTEM is defined as a friend of user 8PUN-FILES (or the user you have specified to hold the :8PUN files) with all possible access rights, see sample below.
Log in as user SYSTEM, preferably on a terminal of the default type. Insert the floppy labelled ND-10079K-1 in FLOPPY-DISC-1 UNIT 0 and type (user-input is underlined):

⊗(ND-10079K-1:FLOPPY-USER)INSTALL-WP
The directory and user names may be abbreviated provided that they do not become ambiguous.
All you need to do after this, is to answer the questions as correctly as possible.
SAMPLE INSTALLATION:¶
Texts written after a copyright sign (⊗) are comments, and do not appear on the terminal during installation.
User input is underlined. All YES/NO answers may be abbreviated to Y/N.
After some of the WAIT messages, a time estimate appears. This may vary quite a lot from installation to installation, and also depends on the system load.
Before we run the INSTALL-WP program, we make some system investigation:
⊗LIST-FRIENDS... ⊗ see if SYSTEM is a friend. If not:
⊗CREATE-FRIEND SYSTEM ⊗ make him a friend and give him all possible access rights.
⊗SET-FRIEND-ACCESS SYSTEM, RWACD ⊗
⊗SET-DEFAULT-FILE-ACCESS, RWACD,.. ⊗
⊗LIST-FILES INSTALL-WP... ⊗ to ascertain that INSTALL-WP:COM,
⊗LIST-FILES XCOM:PROG... ⊗ INSTALL-WP:TEMP and XCOM:PROG do not exist.
⊗USER-STAT SYSTEM... ⊗ check for sufficient space.

To set the default parameter values of NOTIS-WP at a later stage, use the procedure described under the System Supervisor section of the NOTIS-WP reference manual (ND-63.002).
Note: If you wish to change the default printer name, the WP-PRINTERS-K:SYMB file must be updated first.
THE PRINTER DESCRIPTION FILE¶
WP-PRINTERS-K:SYMB¶
This is an ordinary text file, see next page for layout.
This file should be edited to suit your installation's set of printers according to the fairly self-explanatory instructions therein. Note that the printer names must be the exact match of the installation's peripheral or spooling file names. Eg. if in your installation the DIABLO is called DIABLO-1650-1, do not forget to add the -1!
The Logical printer name is the name under which you wish to use the printer, and is independent of the real Sintran-III file name.
This means that the NOTIS-WP user does not need to know which machine each printer is actually connected to. You may even use a printer under several names, but with different default values such as nationality, page width etc.
It will also be necessary to remove those entries which do not apply to your system.
This file MUST be in 7-bits format !!!

CHANGES¶
This release is issued in order to support two new ND printers:
ND 235 Data Products DP-55 Daisy wheel printer with
ND 236 Automatic dual sheet feeder or
ND 237 Tractor feeder
ND 224 Epson RX-80, which replaces the MX-80 as a local printer.
COSMOS file name syntax¶
This syntax has been changed. The syntax is:
\<System&Username>.\<Local filename>
where \<System&Username> has the following structure:
\<Systemname>\<Maindirectory>:\<Username>\<password>:\<account>)
Note that : and ) cannot be used in passwords in a COSMOS context.
Printing¶
When printing to a printer, WP now writes:
Printing to:\<logical printer name> instead of \<Sintran file name>.

CORRECTED ERRORS¶
-
The Diablo 630 printer will now be handled properly.
-
The error causing the message 'Fatal error in DISP_HEADER' is fixed.
-
Supershift sorting: Characters with accents are now sorted as the corresponding characters without accents.
-
Searching for lower case Greek and supershift characters is corrected.
KNOWN, BUT NOT CORRECTED ERRORS¶
-
The directive sign (^) followed by a space may, when justifying in the editor have an extra space inserted between the directive sign and the space.
-
The macro STDLETTER may generate an extra page containing rubbish.
-
Apostrophe (') cannot be used in text parameters when formatting is done by NOTIS-TF.
-
If a document is started with text, the "Paragraph action" will not be performed on the first paragraph. If the document is started by a blank line or a directive (ex. ^p;) the action will be correct.

REASON (I/M/E/F/N): E PROGRAM:¶
SUBJECT:
NOTIS TF library on ND-100
SYMPTOM:¶
DESCRIPTION:¶
The library does not match the documentation
The NOTIS TF library distributed with ND-10079K was unfortunately not the right one. Some directives (eg. ^APPENDIX;) described in the NOTIS TF manual were not included in the library file; others needed to be corrected, (eg. the FIG directives).
The correct library file are on diskette ND-10079K-PATCH2, and can be obtained through your local ND office.
To install the new library file copy the file from the diskette to user SYSTEM, the filename should be exactly as on the floppy.
