Reason for revision MO7.¶

The main reason for releasing the MO7 revision of WP is to make the WP/M version able to support the new NO-616CN printer.

NOTE that to install this revision of WP version M you should answer I to the question whether you want to Install or Modify. Modify will only change the internal parameters of WP.

Changed prerequisites¶

To be able to run the ND-616CN printer from WP you must run SINTRAN version K.

Comments and changes to the PD sheet:¶

If any of the users involved during WP installation has been created as friend of each other, the friend access must be Read, Write, Append, Common and Directory (RWACD), otherwise the installation procedure will fail.

The standard value for EXPAND MODE in the installation job is changed to N.

Modification of the menu value JUSTIFICATION ON NEW RULER is removed from the installation job.

This information is only valid for the PD sheet for 10079M: The numbers which is given about the segment file requirements is decimal. All numbers given by the RT-LOADER when you perform the DUMP-SEGFILE-BITMAP command is octal. This may cause trouble if you do not convert the octal numbers to decimal numbers.

Prerequisites. All terminals running NOTIS-WP must use XON/XOFF communication protocol.

Prerequisites. Sintran III version I must have revision level 610 to run NOTIS-WP.

Comments to the installation job¶

On the ND100 the segment requirements which is given in the PD sheet and in the installation job, is given in decimal numbers. If you run the RT-LOADER to dump the segment file bitmap, the numbers are octal. Be aware of this when you try to find space for installation of NOTIS WP.

Changes made in M07¶

WP/M07 can print to the ND-616CN printer.
The ND-616CN printer is ND's new matrix printer and will replace the PHILIPS-GP300L.

The WP-PRINTERS-L file is updated with the necessary printer definitions to run this new printer. The valid font numbers for this printer are:

The same fonts in double width/double height can be reached if you use font nos 41...48. These fonts should be used with VP=4 and HP=6.

The ND-616CN can be used with a double sheetfeeder. The following cassettes are available: A4 portrait, A4 landscape, US Letter Portrait, US Letter Landscape, US Legal Portrait and Adjustable. The adjustable cassette can be used with height from 11" to 14".

The values for BIN-IN are composed of two digits, the first digit for the front bin and the second for the rear bin. The values are:

1  - A4 Portrait
2  - A4 Landscape
3  - US Letter Portrait
4  - US Letter Landscape
5  - US Legal
9  - Adjustable

This means that BIN-IN=12 means A4 Portrait in front bin and A4 Landscape in rear bin.

NOTE that if a fixed cassette is used. The parameters PL and PW in WP-PRINTERS-L are already known and has no meaning.

WP/M07 supports the BDT sheetfeeder for CANON printers. The following BIN-IN values are legal for CANON with BDT sheetfeeder:

BIN-IN=0  - manual feeding
BIN-IN=1  - bin 1 from BDT
BIN-IN=2  - bin 2 from BDT
BIN-IN=3  - bin 3 from BDT, envelopes
BIN-IN=4  - CANON's own input bin
BIN-IN=5  - 'Pool' of bin 1, bin 2 and Canon bin.

NOTE that feed type in WP-PRINTERS-L must be M to use this BDT sheetfeeder.

Since the internal storing of alternative character sets
is changed, N version documents will not be handled
correctly of version M.

The following errors are corrected in revision M07:

The installation¶

Installation of English version from single side
floppies will now work.

The Editor:¶

The '-' character will in M07 not turn off decimal tab
mode.

You can in M07 use the numeric key pad in decimal tab
mode, even if UOK mode is on.

Fill Mode = None works in M07.

Justification of underlined paragraphs will not add
underlined spaces to the lines.

Moving of words is corrected

Paragraph marks will now be stored in standard texts
also when you mark with MARK/SHIFT+MARK in column 1.

Entering an empty text area gave error message
'DIVISION BY ZERO' in some situations. This is now
corrected.

The printer Manager¶

BIN-IN = 0 on CANON printers will now work fine.

Printing of semigraphics (boxes) on Philips will now
work fine.

The OLIVETTI will now print paragraphsign instead of #
if you use NAT=0.

If you set 'No formfeed before' and 'No formfeed after' on the spooling device (done with SINTRAN-SERVICE command REMOVE-SPOOLING-HEADER), there will now be only one blank sheet between each printout to the OLIVETTI.

The OLIVETTI printer will now print the correct accentcharacters.

The Text Formatter (TF)¶

$S0: will return correct stream name, no matter the number of active streams.

In previous versions &-signs appeared in some situations in first line after top border. This error is corrected.

Bottom border (`' B0:) can now be used in trailers. This means that the FOOTNOTE macro will work correctly.

Generating index lists gave in some cases error message: "Legal numeric range for roman/alphabetic formatting exceeded". This is now corrected.

TF Library¶

In Norwegian version $FDATE was called from macro SD-DA. This is changed to $FDATO.

Known, but not corrected errors in revision M07.¶

These errors are not regarded as serious errors and are not corrected in this revision of WP.

The EDITOR.¶

If you duplicate a region contents with the home command I and parameters 1:$,$+1,N. The region will contain one line too much.

JUST command in home when you have no marked area, will give an error message which disappears.

If you use Command menues and the type-ahead feature, the commands you gave during type-ahead will be interpreted as home commands and not as Command menu commands.

Key Notes¶

WP is not anymore aware of directive start character in the leftmost position of the word wrap area when justifying a paragraph.

The 'Formatting document name' of menu 1 does not contain the file extension.

SHIFT + CANCEL does not remember that rulers were marked.

Copying of text from word wrap area to note margins does not work properly if the source and destination are the first lines of two different regions.

There are several errors concerning underlined blanks at the end of a line. If you insert text in the beginning of a line containing underlined blanks at the end, the underlining will not move.

The underlining will be too long on lines which fill the textarea after justification.

'Page check' will add one empty page if a PG directive is on the last line of a page.

Help/Documentation/Error Texts¶

The help picture on the BIN-IN directive does not give the correct information if you use the landscape sheet feeder on the GP300L.

This error is only valid for the Norwegian error message file: Ved ulovlig operasjon mot fil tilknyttet som segment, sies det 'operation' instead of det gode norske ordet 'operasjon'.

The Norwegian error text: 'Den nye linjalen forårsaket at avsnittsinnrykket måtte reduseres', is missing an 'r' in 'forårsaket'.

When you ask to print, say page 29 of a document, WP will say that all 29 pages are printed, though only the requested page comes out of printer.

When you print to a mass storage file which is already opened by another user, the error message: NO SUCH LOGICAL PRINTER NAME occurs. This is a wrong error message.

If the CP directive is on the last line of a page, PRINT will produce one extra page.

The INSPECT mode of WP.¶

If you give INSPECT commands on the SINTRAN command line like this:

@NOTIS-WP ;Z,filename;C,PHILIPS-300,.2

the third parameter to the C(OPY) command will be ignored.

The Printer Module (PRM).¶

A wrong error message (not able to expand document) is displayed when no more spooling pages left.

Using FONT=6 on the PHILIPS GP300L with ND number ND465, will result in a horizontal pitch change to 10.

The Text Formatter (TF).¶

If the parameter to the chap macro exceeds one line, then the parameter is divided into several lines.

Footnotes at the last sheet of a document will start one line above footnotes on other sheets.

Document names with fullength directory and user names will exceed the screen with.

The TF library.¶

When hyphenation is used sometimes parameters to the standard macroes are hyphenated and thereby not aligned with Left Margin.

1.1 Errors corrected in EDITOR¶

When using Tab. spacefill on with "Expand" on, tab on last line failed when line was filled.

Using the F4 key to sum a large area with a lot of numbers sometimes failed with a (random) error message.

If the result of an F4 calculation was put outside the window containing the marked area, the result was not visible (a manual refresh had to be done).

Discrete hyphen on a space gives odd results when justifying. It is not possible to set discrete hyphen on spaces in the M version.

A region could be deleted even when the content was modified.

When the ‘automatic UPPERCASE’ option was on the conversion from lowercase to UPPERCASE was not shown until a refresh had been done.

The store command now only looks for the document under current user (same as fetch command).

When a paragraph was marked, it was possible to create a new line inside the paragraph by pressing F2 or CTRL + L.

Underline off should work as a HOME command (underline on works). Corrected - use aaa to set underline mode and SHIFT + aaa to reset it (when no marked area).

The printer name in menu 4 is now stored with the document. Many other menu parameters are also stored with the document or in the INIT file.

The refresh screen commands (space and FUNC @) moved the window to column 1 if the window was outside column 1-80.

1.2 Errors corrected in PRINT¶

The default BIN in WP-PRINTERS did not work from WP because WP always set the BIN itself. Now there is a menu 4 parameter where the initial BIN may be set.

A blank line was inserted whenever the vertical pitch was changed from a high to a low value, or vice versa.

With PL=66, TB=4 and BB=2, direct output from WP had a top border of 5 lines and not 4 with the standard VP=6, and only 59 lines in the page body.

1.3 Errors corrected in INSPECT¶

Inspect document X, return to EDITOR, delete main document entry in menu 1 and try to inspect document Y: WP would still inspect document X.

When formatting a document with page width greater than 300 INSPECT crashed. Maximum page width is now 255.

Sometimes graphic characters were displayed as mathematical characters in INSPECT.

A line containing only mathematical characters and exceeding column 60 made INSPECT behave very strangely.

1.4 Errors corrected in TEXT FORMATTER¶

If the ^NP; directive was used outside ^SIP; - ^EIP;, the line number in the error message was wrong.

Formatting large documents with indexing sometimes failed. This has been corrected, or the message "Capacity exceeded" is issued.

When TF gave the error message "FATAL error, cannot continue", and the user wanted to return to WP, the user sometimes ended up in menu 1.

Sometimes when the underline character had been redefined, underlined text was printed without underline and with the underline character before and after the text.

^PG; between ^RO; and ^SO; directives gave an error message "PRIVILEGED INSTRUCTION."

When printing index with words containing french accent characters, the sorting of these words was incorrect; they appeared at the end of the index list.

Page headers etc. may now use a special font provided the ^FONT; directive is put in the parameter text. The selected font will remain effective for the header/trailer until

explicitly changed. This also applies to ^CHEAD;, ^XHEAD; and the contents list. All parameters saved with NF/OF are stored.

If a minus was given in front of a number (e.g. from -100 to +100), TF sometimes used the minus as a hyphenation point.

The ^FIG-CP; macro did not always work as described.

The trailer was not printed on the last page of a document.

The ^RR; directive did not work properly.

If you have a document consisting of some free text followed by chapters separated with the ^CHPG; macro (or ^CHPG-ODD; or ^CHAPTER;), the first chapter did not start on a separate page.

Blank lines immediately following a ^VP; directive were printed using the new pitch. ^VP; at the very top of the document is honored.

Several errors in handling of underlined text have been corrected.

A hyphen within an ^AW; is no longer a possible hyphenation point. A hyphen following a space is no longer a possible hyphenation point.

The directives ^MK;, ^CM;, ^FIX;, and ^NREDEF; now release all scratch space after use.

Record files are read one record at a time when using the ^RR; directive.

Formatting an empty file no longer causes a TF crash.

The name of the :OUT file must match the name of the main input file exactly.

Directive start (^DS;) followed by line feed (end of line), by supershift-space or by justification space is treated as directive "start - space."

A "directive start - space" sequence will never be interpreted as a directive start, even if the string is evaluated repeatedly.

A ^FONT; or ^X; directive on a separate line or with both a preceding and a following space no longer causes contraction of the preceding word and the following one.

When a currently active macro is cleared or killed, execution of this macro is properly terminated.

The ^SLEN; directive now counts characters in alternative character sets as one character rather than as two.

Characters in alternative sets displayed with the ^OP; or ^MS; directives are printed as '&' rather than as "garbage".

When updating an integer macro, a leading minus sign will negate the first term rather than negating the remaining expression.

Directive execution, underlining and interpretation of line breaks according to filling mode are done in full, even when reading (unquoted) parameters of a macro/directive call.

TF now properly detects when all available space is consumed.

Blanks at the end of a macro body are not ignored.

Blanks before directive start are ignored even when preceded by a blank line.

If two words are separated by insignificant blanks only, TF will remove all but one.

Nested IF-calls (another IF in the condition part) will no longer cause strange errors.

Alphabetic formatting of numbers larger than 676 is correct.

Footnotes will no longer appear in the table of contents.

2 KNOWN, BUT NOT CORRECTED ERRORS¶

2.1 EDITOR¶

Text to the left of left border may be deleted or destroyed when copying or deleting is done in the left note margin.

If the paragraph indentation after justification causes only ONE character to remain on the first line and the word must be hyphenated manually, the word is not displayed correctly in the home position.

When hyphenating a word as close to the end as possible, and the whole line is underlined, the hyphenation character disappears.

When justifying from a wide wordwrap field to a narrow wordwrap field, with text in the right note margin, the note margin text is not placed correctly and there will be too many blank lines.

The status line (at the bottom of the screen) is one position too short.

Conversion of file names containing Æ, Ø or Å does not give the error message "Illegal character...".

When no Group divider is given in the Editing menu (3), this is indicated by an "&" character rather than by the text "None".

No HELP is available on the parameters of the home commands C and J and the menu command NOTIS/TF. The commands start executing instead.

The number of bytes displayed when fetching or storing documents in S format is not correct.

Only the currently executing UDK may be aborted by HOME or CANCEL. If nested UDKs are active, execution will continue with the UDK calling the aborted one.

Observe (NOT an error): When the ^CO; directive is used, PRINT will report more pages in the document than the page check command, due to the contents pages.

2.2 PRINT¶

PRINT behaves incorrectly with ^HP; (Horizontal Pitch) and/or ^VP; (Vertical Pitch) at the start of the document (hint: set the initial values in the Print menu (4) instead).

If ^SD; is used before ^CH; and ^CO;, there will be garbage in the contents list.

Several ^PG; directives at the beginning of a document produce one page less than the directives given.

Page list "9:10" behaves correctly, but "9,10" prints the pages contiguously (no page break).

If ^HU; or ^HD; with overprint is used together with MARK, the "marktext" text to the right will be printed in a wrong position.

2.3 INSPECT¶

Underlining of significant spaces is not displayed.
Underline off followed by underline on causes the next character to disappear.
^TB; greater than the screen height causes INSPECT to behave strangely.

2.4 TEXT FORMATTER¶

In the index list, there is no distinction between accented and unaccented characters.
Automatic indexing will not index terms containing spaces.
Macro calls immediately following ^LIB-CONT; directives will be executed.
If a macro explicitly sets the values of ^DS;, ^DE;, ^UC;, ^SQUOTE;, ^MSQUOTE; or ^MEQUOTE; to the current ones, it has no global effect. If the values are actually modified, it does have global effect.
^DS;, ^DE;, ^UC;, ^SQUOTE;, ^MSQUOTE; and ^MEQUOTE; must be within the basic character set (standard ASCII characters) or VTM character set 1 (Greek, semigraphic).
Text in the ^MS; directive and the ^OP; prompt cannot contain characters in alternative sets.
If the first character in a parameter to the ^MS; directive is LF when ^FM=C;, the first line is indented by one column on the screen.
A file containing ^LIB-CONT; directives may not be in S format.

The library file which is implicitly included must contain at least one ^LIB-CONT; directive, followed by at least one other directive.

If nothing but the end of the current line follows an ^IN; directive, the default values for system, directory and user name are not taken from the file containing the ^IN; directive but from the file including this file.

If a boldprinted area extends across a ^CH;, ^SE;, ^SD; or ^SU; directive, the first line of the new chapter is not boldprinted.

If the last directive executed on a page is ^OF;, the trailer will be printed using this format.

3 CHANGED PREREQUISITES¶

SINTRAN III version 1 or newer is required.

A new HELP system gives HELP depending on the current situation, or HELP on function keys or keywords.

Page break control and page navigation.

Multiple rulers throughout the document.

Lines now have three fields: the left and right note margins and the wordwrap field.

New storage format (the ND Standard format). This uses less disk space than the old 16-bit format. WP-M still handles the 7-bit and 16-bit formats.

Standard texts may be stored in a library and fetched by name.

Temporary texts may be saved and recalled in the same way as standard texts, except that they are not stored permanently.

User Definable Keys (UDKs) may be defined. The 14 keys on the numeric keypad may be programmed with text and functions. An additional 46 UDKs may be defined and used as subroutines. Each UDK may hold up to 1000 keystrokes. UDKs may call other UDKs, or themselves.

Automatic, semi-automatic and manual hyphenation is available.

NOTIS-DS and NOTIS-ID may be used directly from WP (provided that they are installed on the system).

WP may be set to work with DS documents as default, instead of SINTRAN files.

The FIELD key now only marks the current field, while SHIFT + FIELD marks the whole line.

The mark functions have been changed. Pressing the FIELD, SHIFT + FIELD, PARA, SENT or WORD keys repeatedly extends the marked area (adds a new mark object to the marked area). MARK and SHIFT + MARK may be used to increase or reduce the size of the marked area.

The menus 1-4 have been reorganized, and a fifth menu has been added.

The information shown on the status line has been reorganized.

Automatic display of the current position (verify mode) is changed. An arrow in the tabulator line now indicates the cursor position.

Output from the Value command now displays the ASCII signs within single quotes (same as input).

When searching for text strings WP-M remembers the last search string used in each region.

4.5.6 Other TEXT FORMATTER Changes¶

Implicit left/right/center justification of HEADER-1, HEADER-2 and TRAILER is no longer done.

The current ^DS;, ^DE;, ^UC;, ^SQUOTE;, ^MOSTART;, and ^MOEND; directives are suspended and the standard characters are inserted when printing headers, trailers, trigger macros and trigger strings.

The full stop after the last page number in an index table entry is removed.

The separator between the ^X; directive name and the main index term must also be used to separate the main term and the subterm.

If a page break occurs in the index list in the middle of a subterm list, the main term is repeated at the top of the page.

Illegal characters in the parameter list to directives ^LIB-CONT;, ^MK;, ^CM;, ^ENABLE;, ^DISABLE;, ^FIX; and ^NREDEF; are now ignored.

^IN; directives intermixed with ^LIB-CONT; directives will not terminate reading of the file.

Search strategy for LIB, INIT and ERR files is somewhat changed.

Forward references are defined by the first definition of the macro rather than by the last definition.

When filling in a forward reference defined by the ^RD; directive, the body of the macro is copied without execution of directives.

All macro types are stored in the same table.

Range violation when printing numbers in alphabetic or roman format forces numeric format.

Formatting of alphabetic numbers now uses the entire alphabetic range, dependent on the language version in use.

Blanks before directive start are ignored even when ^JM=R;.

The :OUT file is opened immediately after the :TEXT file has been found.

Error messages concerning forward references contain the input file name and line number where the reference occurred.

Improved error handling when a semicolon is missing and when margin settings give a text width of less than two positions.

Undefined forward references are asterisk filled. Default width is two character positions.

^SO,name; uses a scratch file region rather than its own file.

$CLINE returns the actual line number if called within H1/H2.

Each main text, page header, page trailer, contents list and contents page header has a full set of formatting parameters saved/restored by NF/OF.

Menu 5 values serve as initial formatting parameters for header, trailer, contents and contents page header.

^PW; (Page width) may be given a maximum value of 255.

It is now possible to specify the separating character when using the ^SIP; macro by adding the separating character to the numbering parameter, e.g. ^SIP,A.; will result in A., B. etc.

Integer value macros are now 32 bit values, giving a numeric range of approximately 4 billion.

When updating integer macros, relative multiplication and division are possible.

When printing integer macros, the field width can be specified as the second parameter. The value is printed right justified in the field.

Forward references may refer to ordinary macros, integer macros and trigger macros, as well as to reference macros.

A trigger macro may also be called as an ordinary macro.

A full character set is available in indexing, including space.

^INDEXON/format/linemarker/colwidth/;. "format" is one of C/P/N/Sn. "linemarker" will replace the dot in the index list. "colwidth" indicates the width of the page number column.

The set of system values that can be printed is increased to cover all directives which have any associated value.

Most system values may be used in trigger expressions.

A macro name may start with a dollar sign.

An asterisk preceding the name in a directive/macro call (^*call) causes a call to the original definition when the directive/macro has been redefined.

^PM,n,def,lev; and ^n,def,lev;. "lev" indicates how many levels to descend on call stack to select the parameter.

^$CN,format,seclev;. "seclev" indicates the section level for which the chapter/section number is to be returned.

^CN,number; may be set to zero.

^IN/filename/S;. "S" indicates that a standard text library is to be opened. Only one standard text library may be open at a time, ie. when opening the second library, the first will be closed.

Many improvements have been made in the index facility: User defined heading, multiple word index terms, full character set, user defined ref. string as alternative to $PN, new alternative standard ref. string, trigger string when the first letter changes.
It is now possible to redefine the quotation marks and the macro quotes (< and >).
The error messages from TF may now be printed to a file.
The system values 'Input file name' and 'User name' are now available.
Extensions to the indexing mechanism require more space per index term during formatting. The maximum number of index terms is somewhat lower compared to previous versions.
Forward references require more space than in previous versions.
Turning hyphenation off in the document menu will release space, increasing the maximum number of index terms and/or macros.

4.6 Library Compression Program¶

A significant part of the text in the standard library macros consists of spaces before directive start, insignificant CR/LFs, comment macros and ^IR; directives. In order to reduce memory space requirements for macros, the macro library may be processed by the TF-LIB-COMPRESS program, which will remove spaces, CR/LFs, comments and (optionally) IR directives. This will not alter the execution of the macro.

The program is self-explanatory. ^IR; directives should NOT be suppressed if formatted documents are to be loaded into an IR database.

Be aware that the readability of a compressed library is drastically reduced compared to the original version. The program is primarily intended for ND-100 installations; on ND-500 increasing the size of the TF work area while keeping the library non-compressed will make changes to the library easier.

4.7 Hyphenation Tables¶

The files of the type :HBRF contain hyphenation rules/exceptions used by WP and TF. English hyphenation tables are presently not available. These will be distributed in a program revision as soon as they are available.

4.8 Terminal descriptions - DDBTABLES¶

The file DDBTABLES-E04:VTM is installed together with WP-M. If you already have a version of the DDBTABLES-E:VTM file, the new one will be placed under user SYSTEM with the file type :NEW.

4.9 The INIT-file¶

The file NOTIS-WP--M:INIT is installed together with WP-M. If this file already exists, the new one will be installed with the file type :NEW. ( must be replaced with the appropriate language, and with the current revision of the file).

5 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE¶

NOTE: Before starting the installation program check the list of PREREQUISITES on Page 1 and 2.

5.1 Starting the installation¶

The installation of NOTIS-WP is initiated by starting the installation program on the distribution floppies:

Disable USER ENVIRONMENT on your terminal, log in as SINTRAN user SYSTEM and enter the following commands (user input is underlined):

The installation job will now start and guide you through the installation of NOTIS-WP. The installation job checks whether the requirements for doing a successful installation are fulfilled before the job actually starts.

Note that when the installation job prints the resource requirements for user SYSTEM, the number of files will be somewhat lower than the number specified in this program description sheet. This is correct, as some of the resources are already occupied by the installation job.

5.2 Default values used by the installation job¶

The installation job will ask for several parameters to tune NOTIS-WP for the specific installation.
