4 Read This First

The ES platform consists of four directories, all placed on the system disk:

PACK-BASIC        ----->  DISC-4-SCSI-1,0,0
PACK-MAIN-SW      ----->  DISC-4-SCSI-1,0,1
PACK-EXTENSION    ----->  DISC-4-SCSI-1,0,2
PACK-APPLICATION  ----->  DISC-4-SCSI-1,0,3

a) PACK-BASIC contains system files and must remain as it is when delivered from NORSK DATA A.S. Some few exceptions exist.

b) PACK-MAIN-SW contains configuration files for the system and customer-defined users.

c) PACK-EXTENSION contains your additional ND applications not included as standard on the platform.

d) PACK-APPLICATION is reserved for the different business units belonging to NORSK DATA, and their application packages.

NOTE!
The Basic Software Package for ND-5000 ES Systems is delivered as an
integrated suite of products in versions not supported separately.
Copying products separately from the Basic Software Package onto other
systems is therefore not permitted.
Likewise, installing new versions of this software separately
(except SINTRAN III as described in chapter 10), is not permitted and
is not supported by Norsk Data.

5 Manual Installation Procedure

This procedure should be followed when a new version of the Basic System Package is to be installed as part of upgrading from an older version.

CAUTION!

All software located on PACK-BASIC will be destroyed and a new version of PACK-BASIC will be restored from the streamer. On user area SYSTEM there may be files belonging to products other than those listed in chapter 10 (libraries, init files etc.). Backup of these files must be taken before the disk is restored.

1. Preparations Before Stopping the ND-5000 ES:

a. Perform a controlled shutdown of the ND-5000 ES:

Log in to user area SYSTEM and execute the command:

@MODE (MODE-FILES)SYSTEM-SHUTDOWN:MODE

All configuration-dependent system files located on PACK-BASIC will be copied to user CONFIG-FILES on PACK-MAIN-SW.

b. Execute the command @LIST-TITLE,... and note the CPU number and type. You may be asked for it later in the installation procedure.

c. Check that the file (MODE-FILES)DEF-PERIPHERALS:MODE corresponds to your system.

4. Initialising the New Platform:

Press the MCL (Master Clear) and the LOAD buttons on the Operator panel.

The system will then start (this takes about 5 minutes) and the following text will appear on the terminal:

--------------------------------------------------
! All configuration-dependent files are now reinstalled !
!                                                        !
! Please continue with next point in the installation !
! procedure in the PI sheet. !
--------------------------------------------------

Customise the new platform:

a) Platform Preparations

Log in as user area SYSTEM and start the installation program @PLATFORM-INST~

Answer the questions according to the software and hardware configuration on your system.

The installation program will now prepare the system according to your specifications.

b) Do a Warm Start: @RESTART-SYSTEM~

The system is now running through a complete cold start and warm start (this takes about 15 minutes).

When the system has been restarted, the following text is displayed on the console printer and on the console:

>> The ND-5000 ES is available

c) Swap File Configuration

This system has only one swap file with a size of 2000 pages. This means that before the system is taken into use you must define a swap file on a "non-platform" directory.

  1. @CREATE-FILE (<directory name>:<user name>)swap-file-1:swap,<size>~

  2. @ND~

    • DELETE-SWAP-FILE (<directory name>:<user name>)SWAP-FILE-1:SWAP~
    • DEFINE-SWAP-FILE (<directory name>:<user name>)SWAP-FILE-1:SWAP~
    • EXIT~

Point 2. above must also be put into the file USER-DISKS:MODE

@PED-E (MODE-FILES)USER-DISKS:MODE~

The installation of the basic platform is now complete and ready to operate with a new version of the basic software.

CAUTION!

Remember to take a complete backup of the System disk PACK-BASIC, PACK-MAIN-SW, PACK-EXTENSION and PACK-APPLICATION (PACK-APPLICATION is optional).

This is for security reasons in case of disk problems later on.

6 Errors Corrected

All reported errors have been corrected.

7 Errors Known But Not Corrected

  • SPRINT SINTRAN Spooling System (ND 211056 A05)

    If on startup of SPRINT, device numbers 1032-1039 (and maybe others) are being used, SPRINT will not be able to stop the SPRT programs which have reserved these device numbers. Consequently, SPRINT will not be able to use the associated printers.

  • BACKUP Manager (ND 211226 B04)

    • RESTART-USER in the menu has not been fully corrected. It is not possible to do this against a remote server.
    • Problems with treating EOF-status as OK after 'space-EOF' function. This is a problem for non-SCSI magnetic-tape drives when listing volumes spanning more than one tape.

8 Limitations

  • BACKUP Manager (ND 211226 B04)
    • Indexed files larger than 65000 pages cannot be copied by Backup Manager (contiguous files can be copied when logged in as user area SYSTEM!)
    • When performing image copying in batch mode (for example, via BM-scheduler), you cannot copy the directory where the input and output batch files for this job are located (normally the directory where user areas SYSTEM and ND-OPERATIONS are located).
    • You cannot copy TO a DOMINO/SCSI tape device from a remote computer.
    • Image backup from ND-100 disks to tape/GTS devices connected to DSS is not possible.

11 Creating and Customising a NOTIS-DS Version E Archive

If you have previously installed NOTIS-DS version D on your ND-5000 ES, you should now upgrade to the E-version.

You must then create a new (E-version) database and convert your old database using the program DS-CONVERT. The conversion takes time (6-8 Mbytes per hour). Until the conversion is completed, you need disk space to keep both databases. This chapter contains a detailed description of how to create a NOTIS-DS version E database and convert the database from version D to version E.

This chapter consists of four parts:

  1. Creating the NOTIS-DS version E archive
  2. Defining NOTIS-DS access from frontend computers
  3. Converting an existing NOTIS-DS version D database to NOTIS-DS version E
  4. After successful conversion to NOTIS-DS version E

1. Creating the NOTIS-DS Version E Database

NOTE!

____________________________________

This chapter does not apply if
you are using NOTIS-DS version E
already.

It is important that you follow
the procedure in the order shown.
____________________________________

a) Before you create your database, you must make sufficient contiguous space available for the user areas designated to hold the database files (DSBASE) and R-log file(s) (DSLOGG).

Refer to chapter 2.3 Estimating the space you need in the NOTIS-DS Supervisor Guide before you start. It gives you hints for estimating the size of the new database and a description of the program DS-DEFINE.

b) Log in as SINTRAN user area DSBASE.

Copy the file DS-DEFINE-E02:DRL from user area DS-PROGRAMS. Run the program to define the database:

@N0 (DS-PROGRAMS)DS-DEFINE-E02~

A database file should be smaller than 65000 SINTRAN pages, as this is handled by the file-as-segment method.

The program will create all database files and log files, and produce a schema file (DS-FORM:DRL) for initiation of the database.

c) When DS-DEFINE has run successfully, you must initiate the database for SIBAS using SIBR-DRL.

Enter SINTRAN user DSBASE and give the following commands:

@SIBR-DRL
N
N
DS-FORM:DRL
DS-FORM:LIST

Check the output on the file DS-FORM:LIST.

d) Update the file (ND-OPERATIONS)SW-CONFIG:SYMB with parameters for the NOTIS-DS database:

DATABASE-NAME         = DSBASE -l          % 2 spaces before -l
USER-AREA             = DSBASE
DATABASE-ADMINISTRATOR = SIBAS-MANAGER
DATABASE-ADMINISTRATOR = <UE user name>
SIBAS-PROCESS         = 23
AUTO-START            = ON
R-LOG-LIMITS          = 80,95,99.5
R-LOG-MONITORING      = 5
B-LOG                 = YES
B-LOG-FILE-SIZE       = 1000
R-LOG                 = DIRECT
NUMBER-OF-R-LOGS      = <number of files>
R-LOG-FILE-SIZE       = <file size>
R-LOG-USER-AREA       = <directory>:DSLOGG  % Maximum 8 characters
R-LOG-USER-AREA-n     = <directory>:DSLOGG  % Maximum 8 characters
HOLD-IF-FULL-R-LOG    = YES
AUTO-RECOVERY         = YES
HEADING               = NOTIS-DS database

e) Next, the database must be prepared for use by NOTIS-DS.

Log in as SINTRAN user area DSBASE and do the following:

@LOOK-FILE←
OPEN DSBASE:DATA...←
PATCH 0 30←
IOD←
←
EXIT←

f) Log in as SINTRAN user area DSBASE and start the NOTIS-DS database using the START command in SIBAS-Service.

The first time you start the database you must use SIBAS-Service and not SIBAS-Manager because only SIBAS-Service will initialize the log files. Check that the database is running properly. To do this, use the command STATUS/One database in SIBAS-Service.

g) After the database has been started, the NOTIS-DS-hierarchy must be initialized.

Log in as SINTRAN user area DS-PROGRAMS to edit the file DS-MAKE-DB-E02:MODE.

Substitute <CPU number> with the CPU-number of your ND-5000 ES.

Log in as SINTRAN user area SYSTEM to run the job:

@MODE (DS-PROGRAMS)DS-MAKE-DB-E02:MODE...←

Then stop the database using the STOP command in SIBAS-Service.

Now, take a backup of your new database.

h) The NOTIS-DS archive must have a database password. This password should not be confused with the password of the UE user called Database administrator.

To define the database password, you must do the following BEFORE starting the database again:

Log in as SINTRAN user area DSBASE.

@SIBR-DBM~
DSBASE~
DSBASE~
~
PRIVACY/DEFINE/DBA-PASSWORD <password>~
EXIT~

i) Having been defined in the database, the database password must also be defined in NOTIS-DS.

Log in as SINTRAN user area SYSTEM and start NOTIS-DS.

Use the command ADMINISTRATION/CHANGE PASSWORD and give the same password as with SIBR-DBM.

j) To enable SIBAS-MANAGER to handle the database, you must enter information about the database and password in the file (SYSTEM)SM-DBINFO:SYMB:

k) Finally you must start the NOTIS-DS Emulator server to enable other NOTIS products (ID, WP etc.) to access the DS-archive.

Log in as SINTRAN user area SYSTEM and run the job

@MODE (DS-PROGRAMS)DS-EMSTART-EO2:MODE.,~

Your NOTIS-DS E-version archive is now available.

2. Defining NOTIS-DS Access from Frontend Computers

a) Frontend computer with NOTIS-DS version E installed:

Log in as SINTRAN user area SYSTEM and start the NOTIS-DS.
Use the command ADMINISTRATION/CHANGE PASSWORD and give the database password as defined on the database computer.

b) Frontend computer without NOTIS-DS version E:

If a computer with NOTIS products (but not NOTIS-DS/E) needs access to a remote NOTIS-DS version E database, copy the program DS-EMSERVICE-E02:PROG manually from the ND-5000 ES to a SINTRAN user area on the computer that needs access.

Define the password using the command DEFINE-DS-SYSTEM in DS-EMSERVICE.
The command is described in the NOTIS-DS Supervisor Guide, section 6.8.

3. Converting an Existing Version D Database to Version E

The program DS-CONVERT converts data from a database for NOTIS-DS version D to an E-version database. You have two options:

a) Converting the whole database in one operation.
To do this nobody must be allowed to use NOTIS-DS or NOTIS-ID until the conversion is completed.

b) Converting the database in two phases.
This enables you to leave the NOTIS-DS version D archive available during most of the operation, but the conversion will take longer.

Before you start converting, you must stop the Emulator server by running:

@MODE (DS-PROGRAMS)DS-EMSTOP-E02:MODE.l

and load and start the D-version document server by running:

@MODE (NOTIS)DS-LOAD:MODE.l
@(NOTIS)DS-SERVICE
    START-SERVER
    SELECT-SERVER BS
    START-SERVER
EXIT

The D-version document server (DsDs) and the new database must be running while you convert your database. Make sure that the E-version database is not opened by any users, and that the R-log(s) are turned OFF before the conversion is run.

The different conversion procedures are described in the NOTIS-DS Supervisor Guide, chapter 3.

4. After Successful Conversion to NOTIS-DS Version E

a) Check the output from the conversion to see if the operation has been successful.

b) Stop the D-version document server(s) and the E-version database. Take a full backup of your new database. (You should also back up your old database if you have not already done so.)

c) Delete the standard domain NOTIS-DS (D-version) and define the E-version:

@ND
DEFINE-STANDARD-DOMAIN NOTIS-DS (DS-PROGRAMS)NOTIS-DS-<lan>-E
EXIT

d) You may now delete the D-version program files and domains.

e) Start the E-version database (answer Y when asked if you want to connect the R-log and Y if you want to reset the log).

f) Start the NOTIS-DS Emulator server.

g) Your NOTIS-DS archive is converted and ready for use!
