DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT¶
DNS Domain Name Service for Xenix (with ExceLAN) implements the server and resolver parts of the DNS TCP/UDP/IP protocol, based on the BIND Berkeley INternet Domain name service (version 4.8).
The product consists of the server daemon /usr/nd/etc/named, the resolver library /usr/nd/lib/libresolv.a, the /usr/nd/bin/nslookup utility, on-line manual pages, name database and resolver configuration template files, and the simple /usr/nd/etc/ns nameserver operation shell.
Note that all ExceLAN utilities that use the /etc/hosts file come with a built-in DNS resolver which is activated by creating the resolver configuration file /etc/resolv.cf and edit it according to the instructions in the template delivered with this product.
Refer to the accompanying "OpenLAN DNS Operation Guide" for an introduction to the DNS system as such.

4 Installation Procedure¶
4.1 Automatic Installation¶
#custom (select Add a Supported Product and follow the instructions).
Continue with Non-automatic installation as follows, substituting names, IP-addresses, etc., with the ones you are actually using.
4.2 Non-Automatic Installation¶
ASSUME that the following environment and system characteristics holds true:
- corporate master server: 128.64.16.1
head.corp.COM.NO - departmental master server: 128.64.32.2
boss.dept.corp.COM.NO - installing this product on: 128.64.48.3
node - install for default domain:
site.dept.corp.COM.NO
THEN do the following:
Create /etc/resolv.cf with the following contents:
domain site.dept.corp.COM.NO
nameserver 128.64.48.3 # 'node' to be queried first (BY APPLICATIONS)
nameserver 128.64.32.2 # 'boss' to be queried next: no answer from 'node'
nameserver 128.64.16.1 # 'head' to be queried last: no answer from 'boss'
Create /usr/nd/etc/corp.cache with the following contents:
corp.COM.NO. 99999999 IN NS head.corp.COM.NO.
dept.corp.COM.NO. 99999999 IN NS boss.dept.corp.COM.NO.
head.corp.COM.NO. 99999999 IN A 128.64.16.1
boss.dept.corp.COM.NO. 99999999 IN A 128.64.32.2
Create /etc/named.boot with the following contents:
1) To make it a caching-only server:
directory /usr/nd/etc # zone files to reside on this directory
domain site.dept.corp.COM.NO # default domain for non-dotted names
cache corp.COM.NO corp.cache # boot cache with master server addresses
2) To make it a secondary master for dept, add the following line:
secondary dept.corp.COM.NO 128.64.32.2 dept.zone-

Instructions¶
3) To make it a primary master for 'site', add the following line:
primary site.dept.corp.COM.NO site.zone
Proceed to make the zone file for 'site' (/usr/nd/etc/site.zone) with its minimum content:
@ IN SOA node SiteMaster.node (1.1 10800 3600 3600000 64800)
@ IN NS node
node IN A 128.64.48.3
Add Address entries for all other systems that are to reside in this zone, i.e., systems within the 'site' domain or sub-domains to 'site'.
Append the following lines to the zone file for 'dept' on 'boss':
site IN NS node.site
node.site IN A 128.64.48.3
Append the following line to the zone file for '64.128.in-addr.arpa' on 'head':
3.48 IN PTR node.site.dept.corp.COM.NO.
Add Pointer entries for all other systems (as specified in the zone file for 'site' above):
If specified as 'leaf IN A 128.64.48.10' in /usr/etc/nd/site.zone on 'node', then specify '10.48 IN PTR leaf.site.dept.corp.COM.NO.' in the zone file for '64.128.in-addr.arpa' on 'head'.
Reload the nameservers on 'boss' and 'head' before proceeding to start the newly installed nameserver on 'node'.
Edit /etc/rc.d/7/udaemons.sh to include the following line:
Æ -x /usr/nd/etc/named Å && /usr/nd/etc/named
Start the server with the command:
/usr/nd/etc/named
Use the '/usr/nd/etc/ns' nameserver operation shell to do such things as reloading/dumping the name database or to look at local DNS statistics. To see available functions, do:
#/usr/nd/etc/ns help
