Nature of dependency, software installation control

Before you can use RP for ND-500(0), a software key must be installed on your computer. The software key is an alphanumeric string that is coded from your computer CPU number and the RP product number. The software key is supplied with your RP delivery on a sheet of paper.

The software key must be installed on your computer by using the program SOFTICE, which is a part of product 211846. Start this program when logged in as SINTRAN user SYSTEM. Give the following commands (user input underlined):

SICE : STORE-SOFTWARE-KEY
Product number : 211066

Nature of Dependency, Other Products

To use automatic distribution, you must have the A05 version or later of NOTIS-MAIL.

To be able to store or read documents stored in NOTIS-DS, version C02 or later of NOTIS-DS must be installed.

WP-PRINT (installed with NOTIS-WP version N or later) is required to use the 'Automatic printout' facility. NOTIS-WP version N is also required to print box graphics, accent characters etc. properly. For reports with ASCII input only, NOTIS-WP version M may be used for printout.

To create user groups in UE, as protection against unauthorized updating of SIBAS use UE-PMAN.

To read from ISAM files in multiuser mode, the ISAM multiuser ND-500 segment IS-MULTI version J or later must be installed. RP for ND-500 may read from ISAM files in singleuser mode even on computers where ISAM is not installed.

To read from NOTIS-IR databases, NOTIS-IR version G or later must be installed. The H version of NOTIS-IR is required to get an integrated link between NOTIS-IR and RP for ND-500.

To read from remote SIBAS databases, a SIBAS-BACKEND version that corresponds to your SIBAS version must be installed.

To define or modify reports, you need NOTIS-RG.

4 Installation Procedure

You must be logged in as SINTRAN user SYSTEM to install NOTIS-RP.

The first time RP is installed on a ND-500(O) computer, a valid RP software activation key must also be installed. This may be done before or after the RP installation. The procedure is described briefly in the 'Dependencies' section, and in the product information for 211846 Software Installation Control Environment.

4.1 Automatic Installation

Insert the floppy marked 211066E--01D in the floppy station, enter the floppy, by typing @ENTER-DIR,,FLOPPY-D-1,<unit> ↵ start the installation by typing @(211066E:FLOPPY-USER)IN-RP ↵

The following questions have to be answered during installation: (Online help is available; press '?' to get help).

The answers are stored in the file IN-RP--E:INST on user SYSTEM, and the answers are used as default values the next time you install NOTIS-RP.

  1. Where do you want to place the domains?
    Specify the SINTRAN user area where you want to copy the domains, default user is DOMAIN-USER.

  2. Do you want to report from SIBAS databases?
    Answer Y (YES) if you have SIBAS installed on your computer, and want to create or produce reports from the SIBAS database(s).
    Answer N (NO) if SIBAS is not installed on your computer.

  3. Where are the SIBAS library files placed?
    Specify the SINTRAN user area where the SIBAS library segments are stored, default user is SIB-500.

The following files are required:

SIBAS/II version F SIBAS/R version A SIBAS/R version B
SIBAS-LIBRARY-F SIBR-LIBRARY-A SIBR-LIBRARY-B
SIBAS-MESSAGE-F * SIBR-MESSAGE-A SIBR-MESSAGE-B
SIBR-MES-TS-A SIBR-MESS-TS-B

Note:
* - The installation job will search for SIBAS-MESSAGE-F:PSEG on the specified SIBAS user. That segment will be used instead of SIBR-MESSAGE-A if it is found.

This makes it possible to report from both SIBAS/II version F and SIBAS/R version A databases. It is, however, not possible to report from both SIBAS/II version F and SIBAS/R version B databases.

Specify the version of SIBAS that is installed on your computer.

Version Code
SIBAS/II version E E
SIBAS/II version F F
SIBAS/R version A A
SIBAS/R version B B

The SIBAS version may be found by checking the version of the library segment, which is equal to the version of the file <sibas-user>SIB-LIBRARY-<ver>:PSEG or <sibas-user>SIB-LIBRARY-<ver>:SEG

Note:

It is possible to create and produce reports from both SIBAS/II version F and SIBAS/R version A databases. The installation job will search for SIBAS-MESSAGE-F:PSEG on the specified SIBAS user. That segment will use SIBAS/II version F instead of SIBR-MESSAGE-A if it is found. As mentioned above, it is not possible to report from both SIBAS/II version F and SIBAS/R version B databases.

5. Do you want to convert the domains to the new domain format?

The domains are stored on the floppies in the old domain format.

  • Answer Y (YES) if you want to convert the domains on the new domain format, (one .DOM file). You will always get the new domain format if you have SIBAS/R version B.
  • Answer N (NO) if you want to have the domains in the old domain format, (with Description-file and :PSEG, :DSEG and :LINK files). You will always get old domain format if you have SIBAS/II version E or F.

If you link to SIBAS/R version A, which may be in any of the two formats, choose the format used by this installation of SIBAS.

If you need no link to SIBAS, choose the format most often used on your machine.

6. Where is the Convert-Domain program placed?

Specify the SINTRAN user area where the convert program CONVERT-DOM is stored, default user is DOMAIN-USER.

The file (SYSTEM)IN-RP--E:LOGG contains a log of the installation.

The file (DOMAIN-USER)RP-500-LOAD--E:MODE is a mode file that links the domains to the SIBAS library files, while the file (DOMAIN-USER)RP-500-LOAD--E:LIST contains the result of the linking to SIBAS. Check these files if linking to SIBAS fails - this may not have been trapped by the installation job.

Remember to update the DUMP-REENTRANT (or HENT-MODE) file with the commands required to define NOTIS-RP, RP-START and RG-SERVICE as standard domains. These commands are displayed on your terminal during installation, and may also be found in RP-500-LOAD:MODE.

4.2 Non-Automatic Installation

To install this product manually you must decide which user you want to place the program files on. We have used DOMAIN-USER as an example.

Domain Location
NOTIS-RP--E found on floppy 211066E--01D
RP-START--E found on floppy 211066E--01D
RG-SERVICE-E found on floppy 211066E--02D

The following files should be copied to user DOMAIN-USER:

File Location
RGP-SI-DUMMY-E:NRF found on floppy 211066E--02D

The following files should be copied to user SYSTEM, if the revision code is higher than the files that already exist on user SYSTEM. There can only be one file of the same version of these files on user SYSTEM; you cannot have both DDBTABLES-G03:VTM and DDBTABLES-G06:VTM.

4.3 Loading of the Domains

When you install NOTIS-RP automatically, NOTIS-RP is converted to correct domain format and linked to SIBAS by the installation procedure. When copying the files manually you have to do the following:

  1. Enter user SYSTEM and delete NOTIS-RP--E, RP-START--E and RG-SERVICE-E as standard domains.

    @ND-500-MONITOR
    DELETE-STANDARD-DOM NOTIS-RP-<lang>-E
    DELETE-STANDARD-DOM RP-START-<lang>-E
    DELETE-STANDARD-DOM RG-SERVICE-E
    EXIT

  2. Enter user DOMAIN-USER

3.1 Decide whether to use old or new domain format - see considerations under chapter 4.1. If you want the domains in the old domain format, copy the domains from the floppies:

@LINKAGE-LOADER
REL-DOM NOTIS-RP-<lang>-E
DEL-DOM NOTIS-RP-<lang>-E
REL-DOM RP-START-<lang>-E
DEL-DOM RP-START-<lang>-E
REL-DOM RG-SERVICE-E
DEL-DOM RG-SERVICE-E
COPY-DOM (211:FLOP-USER)NOTIS-RP-<lang>-E *NOTIS-RP-<lang>-E*
COPY-DOM (211:FLOP-USER)RP-START-<lang>-E *RP-START-<lang>-E*
COPY-DOM (211:FLOP-USER)RG-SERVICE-E *RG-SERVICE-E*
EXIT

3.2 If you want the domains in the new domain format, convert to the new format:

@ND (DOM-US)CONV-DOM $ (211:FLOP-US)NOTIS-RP-<lang>-E Y Y 9:9
@ND (DOM-US)CONV-DOM $ (211:FLOP-US)RP-START-<lang>-E
@ND (DOM-US)CONV-DOM $ (211:FLOP-US)RG-SERVICE-E

4.1 If you want to report from SIBAS databases you must link the domains to the SIBAS library segments. SIBAS versions E and F are always in old domain format, SIBAS/R version B is always in the new domain format, but SIBAS/R version A may be in any of the two formats. Additionally, you here define all global entries within RP that may be called when RP is called as subroutine.

Using old domain format:

5. Command Definition

When the loading is done you may define the standard domains by giving the following commands from user SYSTEM.

  1. @ND-500-MONITOR
  2. DEF-STANDARD-DOM NOTIS-RP--E (DOM-USER)NOTIS-RP--E
  3. DEF-STANDARD-DOM RP-START--E (DOM-USER)RP-START--E
  4. DEF-STANDARD-DOM RG-SERVICE-E (DOM-USER)RG-SERVICE-E
  5. EXIT

Remember to update the DUMP-REENTRANT (or HENT-MODE) file with these commands.

4.4 General Load Information

RP is loaded on segment number 11B. This implies that other programs calling RP as subroutine may not use this segment number themselves, nor link to other programs loaded on this segment. The segment number 11B is currently not used by any other ND-released product, but it may be occupied by other programs.

For those calling RP as a subroutine, eight entries within RP can be called from the outside. In addition to mandatory routines rp and init_traps, some Buffer Management (BM) mailbox routines are callable. These are: bma_initialize, bmc_init, bmc_mailbox, bmc_stcmdmail, bmc_pstatus, bm_exit, bm_swapout, bmc_userbu, bmc_ppar, bmc_pcmd bmc_gpsize, bmc_gpar, bmc_gcnd, bmc_call. Routine restore_tr is also callable.

Programs calling RP must NOT load their own BM data if BM mailbox is to be used to transfer parameters to RP.

When a NOTIS-RP revision is reinstalled (f.ex. because of a new SIBAS version), programs linked to the RP segment may have to relink to RP if they use the old domain format. This should not be necessary when the new domain format is used.

When a new revision of NOTIS-RP is installed, and the new domain format is used, there is a change to be made for programs linked to the RP segment. In this example, RP E02 has been installed, while was linked to RP E01.

4.5 The SW-CONFIG:SYMB File

The SW-CONFIG:SYMB file is a configuration and parameter file used by all DIALOGUE products. In this file, database and system parameters may be defined. How to use this file with NOTIS-RG and RP is described in the NOITS-RG Reference Manual. The RP diskettes include a file named as RG-CONFIG-:SYMB, which contains all relevant NOTIS-RG parameters (except for the RG-UPDATE and RP-UPDATE parameters). You may edit this file and append it to your SW-CONFIG:SYMB file.

NOTIS-RG and RP may be used without a SW-CONFIG:SYMB file, but if you use RP with SIBAS databases, there should be a SW-CONFIG:SYMB file. If you use RP with S-format input, the name of the sort sequence file should be defined in the SW-CONFIG:SYMB file (see section "The sort sequence file"). If you are running ISAM multiuser and have changed the ISAM device number, you must also define the new device number in SW-CONFIG:SYMB.

Note that if the SW-CONFIG:SYMB file is created on user area ND-OPERATIONS, it will be a global file for users on your computer. This file is overruled if you have a local SW-CONFIG:SYMB file on your own user area (apart for RG-UPDATE and RP-UPDATE update parameters).

4.6 SIBAS Updating Protection

There are two mechanisms that protect against the unauthorized use of the SIBAS-updating feature in NOTIS-RP. - A parameter in SW-CONFIG:SYMB configuration file (lock/unlock per machine) - Specification in User Environment user profile (lock/unlock per user)

The protection level should be decided and adapted to immediately after the installation of NOTIS-RP. By default, no one is allowed to create or run SIBAS-updating reports.

  1. SW-CONFIG protection

For anyone to be able to define and/or run SIBAS-updating reports at all, this has to be specifically set in the global SW-CONFIG file, i.e. (ND-OPERATIONS)SW-CONFIG:SYMB.

| RG-UPDATE = YES        |
|              |
+--------------+

Three settings are allowed for RP-UPDATE and RG-UPDATE: NO, YES, and ALL.

If RG-UPDATE is set to NO, or the parameter is not defined, NOTIS-RG may not be used for creating or modifying SIBAS-updating reports. The corresponding RP-UPDATE defines whether it is possible to produce SIBAS-updating reports.

If YES is specified, a User Environment user group may be used to restrict update permission to certain users (see next section).

If ALL is specified, all users may use RG/RP to update SIBAS, regardless of User Environment definitions.

The system supervisor should set the (ND-OPERATIONS)SW-CONFIG:SYMB file access to read, and ND-OPERATIONS user area should have a password. (If not already done).

2. User Environment Protection

In addition to the SW-CONFIG protection, it is possible to use User Environment to differentiate between users. The system supervisor may use UE-PMAN to create a user group called RP-UPDATE. If this group is not defined, all users are allowed to run SIBAS-updating reports (assuming RP-UPDATE is set to YES). If this group is defined, only its members are allowed to run such reports.

The corresponding user group RG-UPDATE decides who should be allowed to create or modify SIBAS-updating reports.

4.7 ISAM Device

If you are running RP with ISAM input tables, please note that the ISAM version K used in RP-D uses two internal devices to ensure safe multi-user operation. By default, device numbers 200B and 201B are used. The first device number must be defined in SW-CONFIG:SYMB file if devices other than 200B/201B are to be used:

*
* SW-CONFIG:SYMB file
*
......
......
SYSTEM-NAME : NOTIS-RG
....
ISAM-DEVICE = 202B

This causes ISAM to use internal devices 202B and 203B.

If a device used by ISAM is reserved for a different purpose, RP will 'hang' when trying to run reports with ISAM input. Use the command @LIST-DEVICE <device number> to find a free device or semaphore number (in the range 200B to 277B). Define this free number as ISAM-DEVICE in SW-CONFIG:SYMB.

4.8 The Sort Sequence File

The ND Standard Text Format (S-format) may contain accent characters and special national characters. To sort S-format input data correctly, a sort sequence must be defined. The file SM-STD-:ALPH found on diskette 211065D--01D defines a standard sort sequence for all relevant characters.

Note that different language versions of RP are supplied with different sort sequence files. For example, the Norwegian sort sequence file specifies that "AA" should be sorted as "Å".

If you intend to use RP with S-format input, copy the SM-STD-:ALPH file to user area SYSTEM. The name of this file must be defined in the SORT form in NOTIS-RG for all reports that need a sort sequence file. If the name of the sort sequence file is defined in SW-CONFIG:SYMB file, NOTIS-RG will use the sort sequence file automatically when new reports are defined.

SW-CONFIG example for English version:

*
* SW-CONFIG:SYMB file
*
......
......
SYSTEM-NAME : NOTIS-RG
    SORT-SEQ-TABLE-EN = SM-STD-EN:ALPH

4.9 The RP-START Program

The RP-START program is a program for selecting and ordering NOTIS-RG reports from your report definition libraries. It also allows you to run the reports in batch. The program is documented in RP-START Introduction, ND-63.026 . RP-START is usually started like this:

@RP-START

but it may also be started with library and report name given:

@RP-START <library name>,<report name>

RP-START will then ask the user questions for the report and allow batch or interactive production. NOTE: to be able to order more than 6-7 reports ordered for concurrent batch production, see section "Enlarging the batch input buffer".

When several reports (6-7) are ordered for batch execution from the RP-START program, the batch input buffer gets full. The default size of this buffer is 600 bytes OCTAL (=384 bytes). To enlarge the batch input buffer do the following:

  • Find the number of the batch used by RP-START. The buffer to be enlarged must correspond with the batch number specified in the SW-CONFIG:SYMB-file (parameter RP-BATCH, by default 1).
  • Find the logical unit number, which is the device number for the batch processor + 1: 670 + 1 for batch no. 1, 672 + 1 for batch no. 2 etc.
  • Decide the new buffer size in words OCTAL (=number of bytes/2). If you want to double the size, give = 600B. To get a buffer four times as large, give = 1400B.
  • Change the buffer size using SINTRAN-SERVICE-PROGRAM.
@SINTRAN-SERVICE-PROGRAM
*CHANGE-BUFFER-SIZE
LOGICAL UNIT NUMBER (OCT): <log. unit number>
INPUT OR OUTPUT ? I
BUFFER SIZE IN WORDS (OCT): <new size>
IMAGE ? YES
SAVE-AREA ? NO
*EXIT

The modification will not take effect until the system has been restarted. After a cold-start, the modification has to be done over again.

To find the current size of the batch input buffer:

@SINTRAN-SERVICE-PROGRAM
*CHANGE-DATA
LOGICAL UNIT NUMBER (OCT): <log. unit. no>
INPUT OR OUTPUT ? I
MEMORY ? YES
IMAGE ? YES
SAVE-AREA ? NO
   MEMORY  IMAGE
MAX/   600   600  _
*EXIT

The number printed after MAX/ denotes the size in bytes (OCTAL).

4.10 The RG-SERVICE PROGRAM

The RG-SERVICE program may be used to update SIBAS table definitions in NOTIS-RG libraries. The program is intended for use after a SIBAS database has been initialized or redefined.

After an initialization, the NOTIS-RG table definitions for the database appear to be out of date - even though they are correct. RG-SERVICE solves this problem by changing the table definitions' time stamp.

After a redefinition, RG-SERVICE may be used to update existing table definitions with new information from SIBAS data dictionary. RG-SERVICE ensures that all columns found in an existing table definition are correctly defined. If new tables or columns are defined in the database, new table definitions must be created with NOTIS-RG.

4.11 The Terminal Descr. File

If you already have a version of the terminal description file DDBTABLES-G:VTM, the file DDBTABLES-G03:VTM will be copied to a file named DDBTABLES-G03:NEW (on user area SYSTEM).

If you want to use this new file, you should delete the old file DDBTABLES-G:VTM, and rename the new file by typing:

@DELETE-FILE (SYSTEM)DDBTABLES-G:VTM ↵
@RENAME-FILE (SYSTEM)DDBTABLES-G03:NEW :VTM ↵

This is only required if your RP does not work satisfactorily with your current DDBTABLES-G:VTM file.

4.12 The Error Message File

If you already have a version of the error message file UE-ERMSG--C:ERR, the file UE-ERMSG--C06:ERR will be copied to a file named UE-ERMSG--C06:NEW (on user area SYSTEM).

If you want to use this new file, please delete the old file UE-ERMSG--C:ERR, and rename the new file by typing (for English version):

@DELETE-FILE (SYSTEM)UE-ERMSG-EN-C:ERR ↵
@RENAME-FILE (SYSTEM)UE-ERMSG-EN-C06:NEW :ERR ↵

Revisions C05 and newer of this file contain some RP error messages that are useful if RP is run from a UE menu.

5 Modifications

5.1 New Functionality/Improvements

RP:

  • Production of SIBAS-updating reports, with optional logging of operations. Security mechanisms are provided to prevent unauthorized updating.
  • More effective production when reporting from SIBAS.
  • More effective selection of records.
  • Several non-unique searches in sequence (e.g. for each department, list all employees and all projects).
  • Several outfiles per outfile definition (sub-reports).
  • Automatic distribution of reports after the production, using NOTIS-MAIL.
  • Additional system fields.
  • RP may be called as a subroutine.
  • Implemented feature that is not documented:
    From the EO2 version, it is possible to use a Named Expression as name of printer (for outfiles where automatic printout is specified).

RG-SERVICE:

  • Automatic update of SIBAS table definitions in a given library when database has been redefined.

RP-START:

  • Automatic deletion of used batch-input files.
  • RP-Start now asks for SINTRAN project password, making it possible to run reports in batch from user areas with project password.

# 6 Errors Corrected

RP, errors in the D version that are corrected in E version:

- Sorting on substrings of S-format data gave wrong result.

- The OLD-CONTENTS function did not work for output fields.

- The FINAL-CONTENTS(<output field>) function gave wrong result if <output field> was located in a control footing, and the control column varied only by the last character.

- The ^CE and ^CS system fields did not work when used in named expressions, if output file was produced in S-format.

- Linking of tables with a mix of S-format and 7-bits format did not work in some cases.

- Reports using space saving sort method did not work in some cases when the main table contained manual indexes.

7 Errors Known But Not Corrected

RP:

When RP is called as subroutine, only one report that uses an ISAM file as input may be run. On the second call to RP, with an ISAM-report, you will get the error ISAM fatal error; and return to SINTRAN.

RP-START:

May not be able to start reports that update SIBAS, if database demands a password to be opened.
