4 Installation Procedure¶
4.1 Automatic Installation¶
4.1.1 Preparations¶
Prior to the installation, verify the following:
- Ensure that the user areas specified in Chapter 1.3 exist with the required number of free pages and free files. If not, find a directory having enough space to hold the user areas. The installation program will try to allocate space whenever needed, but you may need to specify on which directory to create user areas.
- The following files will be loaded with UNIQUE-II:
| Abbrev. file name | Default user area(s) |
|---|---|
| SIBAS F | DIALOG-SYS, SYSTEM |
| UE library | UE-PLIB-P2 |
| USER-ENVIRONMENT |
Check where these files are installed. If not installed on the default user area, the installation program will ask where to find these files.
- Ensure that your configuration fulfills all other requirements mentioned in Chapter 1 and 2.
4.1.2 Installation from Floppy¶
- Put the diskette 210729C
-XX-01D into the floppy drive. - Log in to user area SYSTEM.
- Enter directory 210729C-XX-01D.
- Run the INSTALL program on the diskette.

The first time, run all the tasks 1-4, one at a time, in sequence. To reload UNIQUE, run tasks 3 and 4. To re-dump UNIQUE, run task 4.
When selecting the CREATE or COPY option, and an (old) version exists on this user area, you are asked if these files should be deleted. You may answer Yes, No or Manually. When answering YES, program files, domain files, :MODE and :LIST files of current and previous versions/ revisions will be deleted. Afterwards the program checks if there are enough free pages on the user area.
When selecting the LOAD option, there are some questions that need an explanation:
SEGMENT¶
'Give SINTRAN segment name to load UNIQUE on /UQSIC/'
UNIQUE is loaded on 3 SINTRAN segments which will be named Akseg>, Bkseg> and Ckseg> respectively, where
NOTE: Maximum 5 characters in the answer.
SPECIAL¶
'Do you want to load any SPECIAL routines (Y/N)? /N/'
If you answer Y, the program will ask for the name of the :BRF file which the special routine has been compiled into. Answer N (or ↵) if you don’t have any special routines. See also chapter 4.1.4.
LANGUAGE¶
'Language to be used if UE is not active? /NO/'
By default UNIQUE will use the language found in the user profile in User Environment. The answer to this question selects the language to be used if UE is NOT active on the terminal running UNIQUE.
NOTIS-WP¶
'Which version of NOTIS-WP will be used (M or N) /M/?'
Answer M (or ↵) if you have the M version of NOTIS-WP. Answer N if you have version N or later of NOTIS-WP.

SW-CONFIG¶
SW-CONFIG: 'Should it be legal for users to define their own SW-CONFIG:SYMB file? /N/'
Answer Y if you want to allow users to have a personal copy of the configuration file.
NOTE: This should not be allowed if the UNIQUE access control is activated in the global SW-CONFIG:SYMB file. Users will then be able to bypass the control system.
After a successful installation of UNIQUE-II, you must update the system startup file (HENT-MODE:MODE) with the following command:
@MODE (<user>)UNIQ-DUMP-S1-C:MODE (<user>)UNIQ-DUMP-S1-C:LIST
where <user> is the name of the user where the :PROG files are loaded.
4.1.3 Subsequent Installation¶
If at a later date you want to reload or re-dump UNIQUE, you can use the installation program that is automatically copied from the floppy during the first installation. To re-run the installation program, log in to user area SYSTEM and type:
@(DIALOG-SYS)UNIQ-IN-S1-C-^
To reload UNIQUE, run tasks 3 and 4. To re-dump UNIQUE, run task 4. You may of course also reuse the previously created load/dump procedures (:MODE).
4.1.4 Implementing Special Routines¶
To install a special routine the following must be done:
- Write the routine in PLANC, COBOL, or FORTRAN and compile it with the appropriate compiler.
- Start the installation program and select the load option. When the program asks if you want to load a special routine you must answer YES.
- The next question is which programming language the special routine is written in. Possible is FORTRAN, COBOL, and PLANC.

- Finally you must give the name of the object file (:BRF) the special code is compiled into.
- A file named UNIQ-LOAD-S1-C:MODE including the load job will be created. You may run it from the installation program if desired. If you have special requirements for the load procedure or the special routine is split on more than one :BRF file, edit the load file in an editor before running it.
If you at a later time want to recompile/reload the special routine, you will have to run the load and dump jobs after compiling:
From user area where the :PROG files are loaded:
@MODE UNIQ-LOAD-S1-C:MODE UNIQ-LOAD-S1-C:LIST~
From user area SYSTEM:
@MODE (<user>)UNIQ-DUMP-S1-C:MODE (<user>)UNIQ-DUMP-S1-C:LIST~
where <user> is the name of the user where the :PROG files are loaded. Remember to update the system startup file (see also section 4.1.2).
4.1.5 INSTALLING DIALOGUE EXAMPLE DATABASE¶
If you want to install the DIALOGUE example database and the UNIQUE applications (see Dialogue UNIQUE-II Programming Examples, ND-860281), you should select task 5 in the menu. These files are language dependent, and are supplied on the UNIQUE Text System diskettes.
When the program tells you so, insert the UNIQUE Text System diskette, and the examples will be installed on the desired user area.
Enter the <example user> and generate the database named DIALOGUE using SIB-DRL (input file: DIA-DRL:SYMB, DD-catalogue: DIA-DDC:SYMB). Remember to update the file (ND-OPERATIONS)SW-CONFIG:SYMB before starting the database with SIBAS-SERVICE! An example is provided on the diskette.
Prior to running the example applications, enter the <example user> and start UNIQUE-II. Compile the example applications by typing:
> Task : COMPILE-ALL

4.2 Non-Automatic Installation¶
Create a user area with the number of pages mentioned before and copy all the :BRF and :MODE files from the floppy into it.
Log in to the user area containing the :BRF files.
Edit the file UNIQ-LOAD-S1-C:MODE to suit your configuration and run it by typing:
@MODE UNIQ-LOAD-S1-C:MODE "UNIQ-LOAD-S1-C:LIST"
Update the file 'UNIQ-DUMP-S1-C:MODE' in the same way and run it from user SYSTEM. Remember to update the system startup file (see also section 4.1.2).
5 Modifications¶
For modifications from version B to C, see appendix C in the manual DIALOGUE-UNIQUE-II Application Development, ND-860210.3.

The following sections refer to modifications in version C10 or later.
The manual 'UNIQUE Release Information', ND-860352.1, gives more details (revision C10 only).
5.1 New Functions/Commands¶
Revision C10:¶
- Almost all 'yellow keys' (on the TDV NOTIS terminals) may now be programmed (ON-ENDON).
- A facility for compiling whole systems is implemented (System File).
- Global fields are implemented.
- A menu hierarchy may be defined using the new RUN function.
- A new function ORDER-JOB for communicating with the UNIQUE SERVER system is implemented.

Revision C13¶
- New menu command: LIST-VERSION. Displays all information concerning revision level, prefix definitions, etc.
- The system file (:SYS) may now contain System File Commands. The syntax is:
<command>=<parameter>
Currently available commands are:¶
- FILE-NAME=
Check/compile given application file. This is equivalent to just writing the file name without the "FILE-NAME=" prefix.
- LIST-FILE=
Write all messages from the system check to the given file. To turn listing off and close the file, give the command with no file name. If the file does not exist, it will automatically be created. The default file type (extension) is LIST (LST).
- ABORT-ON-ERROR=ON/OFF
ON: Abort system check if a compilation error occurs.
OFF: Do not abort system check if a compilation error occurs. This is default.
- FORCE-COMPILATION=ON/OFF
ON: Compile all applications without checking the necessity of it. This is equivalent to giving the file name with extension.
OFF: Only compile applications which need compilation. This is the default.
The commands may be abbreviated as usual, but there may be only one command per line. If an illegal command is given, a message is given on the terminal, but the system check will not be aborted.
Note: Certain fatal database errors will abort the whole system check.

Revision C14:¶
-
Some new possibilities are introduced in the SW-CONFIG file concerning User Environment and the Unique Access System:
UE-REQUIRED=NO/YES
New command on system level which specifies whether the user must be logged in via UE or not. If YES and the user is not logged in via UE, a message is given and the system is stopped. Default is NO.CHECK-USER=NO/YES/EXIST
New parameter EXIST which specifies that the log-in user must exist as a legal user in the Access System. If EXIST and the log-in user (normally the UE user) is not defined in the Access System, the user is not asked to give a new user name, but a message is given and the system is stopped. Default is NO.
-
UNPACKED DECIMAL as storage type has caused some problems concerning the position of the sign. In SIBAS-DRL it is not possible to specify whether the sign is leading or trailing. SIBAS assumes trailing while UNIQUE uses leading as default. A new parameter in SW-CONFIG has been introduced to overcome this problem.
sign-position=LEADING.TRAILING (default = LEADING)The parameter should be specified under SYSTEM-NAME:
in the SW-CONFIG file for systems assuming that the sign is trailing. SIBAS-DRL allows an S after UNPACKED DECIMALS to indicate separate sign, default is embedded.
- After having disgarded 50 records due to a SELECT statement, the message '... please wait ...' will now be given. After this, the user may abort further database search by first hitting any key and then confirming the abortion by hitting the EXIT key.

# 5.2 CHANGED FUNCTIONS/COMMANDS
**REVISION C10:**
- In the form printout (using the PRINT key), the S-format graphic box symbols are simulated using "-" and "!" instead of just removed.
- It is now possible to have several different logical databases referring to the same physical database.
- The debug function is now complete, i.e. all functions performed are shown.
- The execution of the dynamic LOCK and SET-ATTRIBUTE functions, i.e. with field name specified, are changed. The functions are now performed both on input and display, which for example makes it possible to set attributes on fields dependent on the database contents. Also, when the result field is within the same record as the current field, the setting is only temporary, else it is finite (static).
NOTE: This change may require current applications to be modified.
- The SET-ATTRIBUTE function may now take repeat line number as parameter.
- The handling of multiuser conflicts is changed.
- The screen updating is made more efficient, e.g. applications with many fields are now written faster to the screen.
- The Access System is improved.
- The SIBAS Headings are used, when available, in user messages.
- The EDITOR function is changed and expanded. The function is now a 'normal' input function, e.g. it may be used inside ON - ENDON. It is also made completely dynamic, e.g. all parameters may be expressions.
NOTE: This change may require current applications to be modified.
- Nested IF-structures are implemented.
- While entering Username/Password, the system may be stopped using the EXIT key.

- The compiler detects some more errors and gives better warnings.
- While compiling, a line counter is displayed in line 3.
- The message
’<table> found’is no longer given (considered unnecessary). - The help function will, on dummy fields (column=
’), try to fetch the SIBAS purpose from a column with the name of the field. - After returning from the EDIT-APPLICATION function, the application is only recompiled if any changes have been made.
Note: There is no official revision C12 of Unique-II.
Revision C13:¶
- The length of the DOCUMENT-NAME parameter in the EDITOR function is increased from 30 to 60 characters.
- When a special routine is called in search mode (Shift+F7), the APPLCOM parameter will contain the text
’SEARCH’. - MENU-COMMAND(
’@<OS-command>) functions, specifying operating system commands, are now performed immediately and not delayed until the end of the function execution. This means that a sequence of such menu commands may be given. Example:
on COPY
menu-command(’@DELETE-FILE TO-FILE:DATA’)
message(’Wait, copying file ...’)
menu-command(’@COPY-FILE "TO-FILE:DATA" FROM-FILE:DATA’)
endon
Note: SINTRAN commands may write error messages to the terminal and Unique-II is not able to prevent that. However, the cursor is always positioned at the top of the screen before the command is executed, such that the message(s) will start at the second screen line. You may also use the new menu command options to automatically get a screen refresh afterwards.
- Some new options are available when performing an operating system (e.g. SINTRAN) command using the MENU-COMMAND function. The syntax is:

Currently implemented option codes are:

- $R Refresh the screen after the command is performed.
- $C Close the database before the command is performed.
Note: Should only be used when the command to be executed is starting a separate program.
-
$D Dump restart information before the command is performed. The restart information is dumped to a restart file which makes it possible to leave UNIQUE-II and restart it again getting the same context as given by the restart file. A restart is requested by giving the character @ as the only parameter on the startup command line. Example:
@UNIQUE-II @
- $A After the command is performed, ask the user to confirm by hitting any key on the keyboard. Has the same effect as the HOLD function, except that it is performed, for example, before the screen is refreshed by the $R option.
Example 1: To start the program CHECK-IT after first having cleared the screen:
MENU-COMMAND('@$SCHECK-IT')
Example 2: To start PED (with file WORK) in such a way that after exiting PED UNIQUE-II will be restarted again with the same application and data as when leaving. Also clear the screen before leaving UNIQUE-II:
MENU-COMMAND('@$D$SPED WORK;1,,"UNIQUE-II @"')

Revision C14:¶
- The maximum length of the parameters document-name and initial-document in the editor function is increased to 130 characters. (Version C11 had 30 and C13 had 60 as maximums).
- ND500/5000 only: The maximum number of logical databases in the SW-CONFIG file is increased from 24 to 40.
- ND500/5000 only: The maximum total length of all fields in one application is increased from 2000 to 6000 bytes. This may cause applications not being portable to ND100 machines which still have the limit of 2000 bytes.
- If the user is not logged in via User Environment and the Access System is used, the internal field "AUE-USER:USERNAME" will now contain the user name given by the user on startup. (In earlier versions, the field was blank in such cases.)
- Since C10 the Shift+F7 function has allowed the user to enter search values in locked fields. This has caused some complaints, and a compromise has now been implemented: The user is still able to navigate into a locked key field, but initially, the cursor is always positioned in the first unlocked field of the key.
- After having discarded 50 records due to a SELECT statement, the message '... please wait ...' will now be given. After this, the user may abort further database search by first hitting any key and then confirming the abortion by hitting the EXIT key.

A. Setting/Removing Search Region Limits¶
A.1 How to Set Search Region Limits¶
A search region limit is the key value which marks the first or last record to be available from a table. Normally, the RANGE function is used for setting search region limits. From revision C13, the limits may also be set by the user.
This is useful if you wish to define a temporary "work region" in the table, e.g., before using SHIFT + PRINT.
Search border limits are set by pressing either LEFT BORDER or RIGHT BORDER when the cursor is positioned in a record with contents. The value of the record's main key will then be used as either lower or upper limit respectively. Detailed description of these keys is given below.
Active search region limits are indicated with '(' , ')' or '()' on the status line.
Description of Function Keys Used to Set Search Region Limits¶
Short description of the use of function keys which may be used to set search region limits. See section B for detailed description of these keys in combination with SHIFT + F7.
(...)
LEFT BORDER.
If you press LEFT BORDER when the cursor is positioned in a record with contents, this record will be defined as the lower limit, and it is only possible to see records with values greater than or equal to the selected record. The status line shows '('.
SHIFT +
(...)
RIGHT BORDER.

B. SEARCHING USING SHIFT + F7
SHIFT + F7 leads you into the query mode which allows you to search
for records with a given key value. In this mode the ALTERNATIVE-KEY
fields are also utilized.
When you press SHIFT + F7 the following happens:
1. Fields belonging to the current table and tables which are owned by
the current table are cleared. Search region limits which may have
been set previously, are removed.
2. '?' indicating query mode is shown on the status line.
3. The current search key is marked in inverse video, and the names of
the table and the key are given as a message.
If the current field is a key or a member of a key, that key will be
used as current key, else the main key of the table is used.
4. The cursor moves to the first marked field ready to receive search values.
By pressing SHIFT + F7 again, the next alternative key in the table is
marked and the cursor moves to the first marked field. Repeat SHIFT +
F7 until the correct key is marked.
DOWN ARROW moves the cursor to the next field in the key, UP ARROW to
the previous field in the key. CR works like DOWN ARROW, except when
used in the last field of a group key.
The search is activated by entering a value in the key and pressing
either LEFT BORDER, RIGHT BORDER, STRETCH JUSTIFICATION or PERFORM
from any field, or CR from the last field in a group key. The search
criteria defined by these keys are described below in detail.
If a search is successful, the record found is fetched and existing
repeat lines are filled. The query mode is turned off. Active search
region limits are indicated with '( , )' or '()' on the status line.
If no record fulfilling the search criteria is found, the message
'XXXX not found' is shown.
The query mode is turned off automatically when a successful search is
done. The query mode may also be turned off by pressing EXIT or HOME.
Subchapter A.2 describes how to remove the defined search region limits.
In addition, search region limits on member level are automatically removed
when a new owner is fetched.

Description of function keys used to activate a search¶
Short description of the use of function keys which may be used when searching in an application using SHIFT + F7, giving the search criteria defined by each of these keys.
______

|______|
CR in the last field of a key, or PERFORM in any field, leads to a search without setting search region limits. The record with the nearest key value to the search value is fetched, but you may look at all records.
_____
/ \
|_______|
In a search activated by LEFT BORDER, a record with the search value or the first record with a higher value is fetched. The search value given is then defined as the lower limit, and it is only possible to see records with values greater than or equal to the given search value. The status line shows '('.
________
SHIFT +
________

|________|
In a search activated by RIGHT BORDER, a record with the search value or the first record with a lower value is fetched. The search value given is then defined as the upper limit, and it is only possible to see records with values less than or equal to the given search value. The status line shows ')'.
___ ___
| || |
|___||___|
In a search activated by the STRETCH JUSTIFICATION key, only records with the same value as the search value are fetched, and the given search value is defined as both the lower and upper limit. The status line shows '()'.

5.5 Other Modifications¶
Revision C10:¶
-
Integration with NOTIS-WP version N is implemented. Files produced with this version of NOTIS-WP may now be read correctly by all UNIQUE products.
NOTIS-WP version N may also be linked as a subroutine to UNIQUE-II.
Revision C13:¶
- The default name of XTRA is changed from 'XTRA-C' to 'XTRA'. If XTRA is called something else (or if the name is ambiguous), the correct name must be defined in SW-CONFIG:SYMB as explained in the manual DIALOGUE-UNIQUE Application Development, Chapter 5.
-
Due to changes in the S-format required in different versions of the NOTIS products, a new file must be present on user DIALOG-SYS. This file is named UQ-ND-S:INI and must have public read access.
All S-format files produced by UNIQUE products will have the same S-format header as the file (DIALOG-SYS)UQ-ND-S:INI.
UQ-ND-S:INI is an 'empty' file containing only an S-Format header matching the version of NOTIS-WP you are using on your machine. By storing the S-Format header in a file, it is possible for you to define the default settings and rulers. UNIQUE will read the default header from this user-defined file, if it exists.
If you start using a version of NOTIS-WP with a new S-Format, e.g. going from WP version M to N, just repeat the procedure described below and UNIQUE will produce documents readable by the new WP version.
You have to install/create this file manually:
1. Log in on user area DIALOG-SYS. 2. Start NOTIS-WP. 3. Use the internal menus in WP to set the wanted default values. 4. Make sure you define it to be an S-Format document. 5. Type some blanks so WP will store it as a document. 6. Save this 'empty' document to the file "UQ-ND-S:INI". 7. Set public access to READ: @set-file-access UQ-ND-S:INI R,,,
