ND 10079 NOTIS Word Processor (WP)¶
The ND Text Editor – TED-WP¶
Introduction¶
The ND Text Editor – TED-WP – is an editor program developed to simplify typical office routines – such as the typing of letters, document updating etc. – and generally, to assist in all clerical functions involving the creation of printed matter. TED-WP is intended for use on interactive display terminals, and permits dynamic creation, editing, formatting and printing of text entered by the user. The TED-WP text processing system can be implemented on all ND Computer Systems running the SINTRAN III/VS Operating System.
Compared to conventional methods, TED-WP offers the user several attractive features. Letters and documents subject to frequent changes may be stored, updated, formatted and printed with a few keystrokes whenever the need arises, thus eliminating the need to retype multiple copies of each.
TED-WP also offers a number of powerful commands for the restructuring of text and general layout, that greatly simplify the design and layout of standard forms and documents. Lines, chapters and sections can be modified, moved, added, inserted or deleted within a manuscript by means of simple, easy to learn commands. Tab-stops provide fast positioning on the screen, and therefore quick and easy text entry and correction. Typing errors and misspellings are easily disposed of. TED-WP also has an insert facility for merging text, i.e., segments of another file may be inserted in the text currently edited.
Features¶
- Dynamic Editing – text can be instantly changed on the screen
- Instant Screen Updating – no timelag between operation and screen layout
- Ease of movement within the text (to specified line or character string)
- Selected areas of text may be deleted or moved/copied
- The whole or a selected part of the line under/over may be copied
- All or selected parts of text from other files may be merged into a chosen position within the text being edited
- Ease of movement within a line (to specified position or via horizontal tabulator functions)
- File length up to 32000 lines (i.e. about 500 A4 Pages)
- Searching within the text for occurrences of a selected character string
- Automatic substitution of one character string by another, within a specified area of text
- Adaptable to several VDU terminal types
- Line width up to 256 positions
- Word wrap
- Justify/paragraph between borders
- Format/print output document
- Inspect output document
Product Description¶
TED-WP is intended for use on display terminals. There are several types of commands in TED-WP: the DIRECT commands, the FULL commands, the CONTROL-KEY commands and the PRINT directives. In addition, the INSPECT mode has a series of commands permitting the user to carry out thorough inspection of the output document before sending it to the printing device.
The DIRECT and FULL commands must be given while the cursor is in the screen home position. If a command requires extra information from the user, questions will appear in the top line of the screen.
The cursor can be placed in home position at any time by pressing the HOME-KEY (or the slanted arrow on terminals that do not have a home-key). If the key is pressed a second time, the cursor returns to its previous position in the text.
CONTROL-KEY commands can be given at any time, both in DIRECT and in FULL command mode.
The PRINT directives have pre-initialized values, which may be changed at the beginning of a file.

The ND Text-Formatter – TEX¶
INTRODUCTION¶
The Text-Formatter is a mode in NOTIS-WP which takes one or more unformatted files as input. It then produces a formatted file ready to be copied to a suitable output device or inspected from the terminal.
The input file may have been created with one of the ND editors, or with any other program.
The input file contains both the user text and formatting commands.
TEX has been developed to expedite the work required to layout reports, documentation and similar texts which call for a structured and orderly presentation.
The user can define the details of a title-page, indexing, page headers, page, chapter and section headers, trailer lines and the general page layout by means of simple directives submitted with the text.
Main types of directives¶
- Document Layout Directives
- Format Modification Directives
- Formatting Control Directives
- Directives that Describe the Document
- Indexing Control Directives
- Miscellaneous Directives
- Macro Handling Directives
The Macro Feature¶
A macro is a tool with which to rationalize the work by simplifying trivial routines. In relation to a Text-Formatter, this means that directives which have to be given early in the text to define layout, formatting modi, etc., now can be given in the form of one single directive: a macro. Such a macro carries out the functions of a whole series of directives, and can be used for many purposes.
There are two main types of macros in Norsk Data’s standard macro library:
- Help-macros
- Document-macros
Help-macros can be employed to simplify the use of frequently used directive sequences. It is thus possible to write less and to obtain more during formatting.
Document-macros are used at the beginning of the text file, to indicate the purpose and type of the current file.
Below are some examples of commonly used document-macros and what they produce:
| Macro | Description |
|---|---|
| MEMO | the layout of standard, internal memoranda |
| MINUTES | the layout for minutes of meetings |
| REPORT | a standard report layout |
| LETTER | a standard layout for letters |
Page 4¶
Product Description¶
Cognizance of the rapidly increasing information flow within most organizations has spurred NORSK DATA’s development of the Text-Formatter, designed as a component of an integrated text processing solution. The Text-Formatter obviates a lot of unnecessary work for the user, and provides the functions needed for easy output formatting.
The Text-Formatter processes the text and the directives submitted by the user, and reorganizes the output in accordance with those directives. A Text-Formatter directive or macro is always entered between ^ and ;
Generally, directives entered before the text itself are interpreted as directives affecting the entire file. Some of them may, however, be cancelled or modified during editing. Directives embedded in the text itself signify that special action is to be taken by the Text-Formatter, such as creation of a new paragraph, blank lines, etc.
The user can, anywhere in the text, specify that text from another file is to be entered and formatted as a part of the current text. This facility enables the user to produce a complete document from several, separate files. The files included may also contain formatting directives.
The number of directives for the Text-Formatter is large. Below is a sample of the most obviously useful directives. The inexperienced user can manage very well with only a subset of the directives repertoire to begin with.
Sample Directives¶
| Directive | Description |
|---|---|
| ^ PL, n; | Set page length |
| ^ PW, n; | Set page width |
| ^ PS, n; | Set paragraph spacing |
| ^ PI, n; | Set paragraph indentation |
| ^ P; | New paragraph |
| ^ H1, string; | Insert string as heading |
| ^ TL, string; | Append string as footing on each page |
| ^ BL, n; | Insert blank lines |
| ^ BL; | Break line |
| ^ IN, filename; | Include file |
| ^ CH, string; | New chapter and chapter header |
| ^ SD, string; | First section directive |
| ^ SE, string; | New section directive |
