ND 10080 PED Program Editor

INTRODUCTION

PED is a powerful VDU page mode program editor for asynchronous terminals for use with the ND computers running the SINTRAN III operating system.

It is primarily designed for maintaining source program files written in a programming language, such as FORTRAN, BASIC, COBOL or PASCAL, though its convenience and ease of use makes it suitable for all kinds of text editing. Program files may be compiled by passing control to the PERFORM program, which activates the appropriate compiler.

The text may be read from and written to any mass storage file or I/O device.

Text may be added, modified, inserted, replaced and deleted by using the cursor movement controls and a few self-explanatory, easy to learn commands.

FEATURES

  • Dynamic Editing - text can be instantly changed on the screen
  • Instant Screen Updating - no timelag between operator action and screen layout
  • Ease of movement within a line (to specified character position or via horizontal tabulator functions)
  • Ease of movement within the text (to specified line or character string)
  • Selected lines of text may be deleted or moved/copied
  • The whole or a part of the previous/next line next may be copied
  • All or selected parts of text from other files may be merged into a chosen position within the text being edited
  • Adaptable to several VDU terminal types
  • File length up to 32,000 lines (i.e. about 500 A4 pages)
  • Line width up to 256 positions
  • Searching within the text for occurrences of a selected character string
  • Automatic substitution of one character string by another, within a specified area of text

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

PED is intended for use only on display terminals. The editor is started by typing the name PED. It answers by writing its name and version, and is then ready to accept a command from the input unit. Dynamic editing means that the text on the screen is instantly changed in response to the command entered. The user can save a permanently updated version of the text by writing it to a file.

There are several types of commands in PED: the DIRECT commands, the FULL commands and the CONTROL-KEY commands.

The DIRECT and FULL commands must be given while the cursor is in the screen home position. If a command requires extra information from the user, questions will appear in the top line of the screen.

The cursor can be placed in the home position at any time by pressing the HOME-KEY (or the slanted arrow on terminals that do not have a home-key). If the key is pressed a second time, the cursor returns to its previous position in the text.

CONTROL-KEY COMMANDS can be given at any time, both in DIRECT and in FULL command mode.

Pressing the character H for , or ? will cause the list of all available commands to be displayed on the screen along with a few explanatory words.
