INKJET PRINTER, PT88S¶

The ND110079/ND110080 PT88S InkJet printer is intended as a personal printer connected to an ND display terminal. The InkJet printing mechanism is designed for super-silent operation and a higher printing speed than usually found on small, personal printers. It prints a limited ND-NOTIS character set, including simulated box-graphics.

The PT88S is the ideal personal printer for those who require a printer that offers a better functionality than is usually found on small, personal printers. It prints in both draft and "near-letter-quality" (NLQ) modes, it is super silent, and it prints with 200 cps in draft mode and 66 cps in NLQ mode. The approximate throughput is 38 seconds per page at 1500 characters per page.

It may be used with all ND-NOTIS Office Support products, including NOTIS-BUSINESS-GRAPHICS. It cannot be used with NOTIS- DRAW at the present time.

The ND110079/ND110080 InkJet printer requires "InkJet paper" for optimal result, but it also prints with acceptable results on ordinary copying paper. The contents of the ink cartridge can print an average of 5 million characters.

Operating Principle¶

A cross-sectional drawing of the InkJet print head is shown below. It operates according to the "drop-on-demand" principle. The ink is contained in an easily replaceable ink cartridge. The ink level is controlled via electrodes, which flash the "alarm" lamp on the control panel and signal the interface.

The ink flows from the cartridge into a central supply channel before being distributed to the nine jet channels, which are closed off by a nozzle array plate with nine nozzles.

When a voltage pulse is applied to the piezotube, the pressure in the jet channel is briefly increased and a drop is ejected from the nozzle. A seal automatically closes off the nozzles during lengthy printing intervals and when the power is switched off.
