COSMOS NETWORK MONITOR¶
Introduction¶
The COSMOS Network Monitor is a program that checks out a COSMOS network within a specified timeframe. The program provides the system supervisor or network operator with an online monitor function. The results of the checking may also be stored in a log file for later long-term statistics of the network status.
In version A it is possible to monitor status of:
- The connection between any two systems in the COSMOS network.
- Servers on any system in the COSMOS network. (Requires SINTRAN K)
A Report Production program, which generates status reports from the log file, is also implemented. The status report indicates the number of times the connections and servers are checked, as well as uptime/downtime as a percentage and in minutes over a selected period of time.
Features¶
- Online status of all or the most important computer CONNECTIONS in a COSMOS Network.
- Online status of all or the most important SERVERS in a COSMOS Network.
- Full COSMOS support between the Network Monitor computer and computers which want to see the network status.
- No limitation of Network Monitor computers (Network Domains) in a COSMOS network.
- Network status on a terminal and/or on a log file.
- Report Producer for Network uptime as a percentage and in minutes.
-
Three types of reports are available:
GLOBAL — A statistical report for network connections DETAIL — A detailed report for network connections SERVER — A detailed report for network servers
- Full support with NOTIS-RG if the operator wants to make his own reports (Layouts).

COSMOS NETWORK MONITOR¶
Description¶
The COSMOS Network Monitor consists of three parts:
- Test part, which checks status of connections and servers.
- Monitor part, which does online monitoring on a terminal.
- Report part, which allows the operator to produce reports.
The Test Part¶
The COSMOS Network Monitor is split up in a Server/Client model. An RT-Program (The Network Server) performs the status checking which is defined in a configuration file. The configuration file consists of specifications of the operator’s COSMOS domain, and consists of computer connections, servers and time intervals between checking. The file also consists of the type of logging: To a screen, and/or to a logfile.
The Network Server can run in one operator domain, but several servers can also overlap one another. With this solution, the organization can decide if they want whole COSMOS network, or parts of it, under one domain. One solution is to have one network domain with the most important connections and servers with a network operator (or operators), and departmental subdomains for the end users.
The Monitor Part¶
Example 1 shows the COSMOS Network Monitor Window, and gives an online representation of the status of the operator's COSMOS network domain. The update intervals (T) on the screen can be different on each line and the window may consist of several pages.
There is also a possibility for the operator to 'log on' to other network domains to read a status, for instance in a subdomain, which he usually does not need to have.
The STATUS messages from the network can be:
- OK
- No access to Sys1
- No access Sys1-Sys2
- Sys1 unknown
- Sys2 unknown to Sys1
- No access to system
- System unknown
- No such server running
- Requires SINTRAN K or later
- Timeout on request
The information displayed on the servers, when there have been no errors in trying to reach the servers, are:
- #Ports — Total number of ports matching the specified (abbreviated) server name.
- #ConnPorts — Number of connection ports among total number of ports.
- #FSPs — Total number of Free Service Points for this server.
The Report Part¶
The report part has been made by NOTIS-RG (Report Generator), and parts of the NOTIS-RP (Report Producer) are included in the COSMOS Network Monitor to produce reports on the uptime and downtime of the COSMOS network.
Three types of reports are available:
- GLOBAL — A statistical report for connections
- DETAIL — A detailed report for network connections
- SERVER — A detailed report for network servers

If the operator/supervisor wants to make more sophisticated reports than the standard ones, NOTIS-RG is required. For more details read the COSMOS Network Monitor manual.
