ND 246 NOTIS Terminal¶
Introduction¶
Almost all interaction between a computer and its users takes place via display terminals. Norsk Data has therefore taken care to ensure that their terminals are both functionally and ergonomically correct for their intended purpose.
The ND 246 NOTIS terminal is designed to give special support to such ADP applications as word processing, screen handling, etc. Special function keys speed and simplify the input of commands to the system.
The position and angle of the terminal can be freely adjusted to suit each individual user. The screen can be swiveled and tilted to cut out interference from windows and overhead lighting. In addition, the terminal can be raised and lowered to permit different operators to adjust its height for their comfort. And since there is no cooling fan, the terminal is silent in operation.
The screen is treated to minimize reflection and the display color is chosen to reduce eye strain. The screen shows a flicker-free display of up to 25 lines of 80 characters. Each character is formed in a 9 x 14 point matrix, giving high resolution. Both upper and lower case are provided, with a full character set for each local language. Blink, underline and inverse display are all included as standard features.
The keyboard is of modern design, with a very low profile. This enables the terminal to be used comfortably on a standard office desk. The cabling is concealed under a snap-on cover so the terminal work-station has a generally attractive appearance. The keyboard is of course separate from the display, allowing it to be placed in the most convenient position for each job. The terminal is simple, pleasant and comfortable to work with.

Product Description¶
The NOTIS terminal is produced in Danish, English, French, German, international, Norwegian, and Swedish versions. It is intended to be used for all of Norsk Data's interactive systems, for text as well as for data processing.
PUSH-button functions for sixteen user programmed character strings are provided. The user can program often used words or code sequences. Instead of typing these again and again, the operator simply touches the appropriate PUSH-key. The keyboard has eight PUSH-keys that can be used with SHIFT to provide sixteen functions.
Features¶
- May be seen in two modes: A special NOTIS- mode and a TDV 2215 version 2 (same as TDV 2115) mode.
- 15" screen with bonded anti-reflex faceplate.
- Stand has height, tilt, and swivel adjustment to enable a comfortable working posture to be assumed.
- Low profile keyboard.
- Upper and lower case characters, line drawing, histogram, numeric sub/superscript, Greek letters, and plot characters.
- Insert, delete, copy, underline, move, and erase functions.
- Direct cursor addressing from host.
- Cursor position report to host.
- Local tab handling.
- Local and remote printer control, giving hard copy, terminal bypass, or transaction logging.
- Optional one-page print buffer enabling printing to be done as a background task.
- PUSH-keys allowing commonly used words or control strings to be transmitted by pushing a single key. The strings associated with PUSH-keys are stored in non-volatile memory and are not lost when power is turned off.
- All switches reside in non-volatile memory ensuring simple setup. Set-up is done using self-explanatory menus.
- The terminal is especially prepared for full-screen editing support, for example, applications such as NOTIS-Word Processor, ACCESS Query Language, and FOCUS Screen Handling.
- Seven of the keys on the upper right section of the keyboard may be used in combination with the CTRL key to become local commands to the terminal. Such commands are: To start or stop local printout, to clear error condition in the terminal, to set mode switches and break.
Display modes are available: Combinations of underline, blink, inverse video, and low intensity. In addition double-width display and invisible are included.
- Refresh rate: 50 Hz.
- Cursor: Underline blinking and steady block cursor are softswitch selectable.
Control Functions:¶
Cursor Control:¶
- Cursor right.
- Cursor left.
- Cursor up.
- Cursor down.
- Cursor home.
- Direct cursor positioning.
Scroll Control:¶
- Scroll up.
- Scroll down.
Smooth or step scroll is selectable by soft-switch.
Tab Functions:¶
- Horizontal tab.
- Backward horizontal tab.
- Horizontal tab set.
- Horizontal tab clear.
- Clear all tabs.
Editing Functions:¶
- Insert character.
- Delete character.
- Erase character.
Soft-switch Control:¶
- Set mode.
- Reset mode.
These control functions allow a number of the soft-switches to be controlled remotely without affecting the setting at the next power on.
- PUSH-key loading: 16 PUSH-key strings can be loaded from the host computer.
Specifications¶
Display Characteristics:¶
| CRT | 15" diagonal with bonded anti-reflex faceplate. |
|---|---|
| Characters per line | 80. |
| Number of lines | 25. |
| Character matrix | 7 x 9 dot characters in a 9 x 14 dot cell. |
| Character set | Full upper and lower case character sets are available in international, German, English, French, Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish versions. All standard sets contain semigraphic characters for line drawing, histogram plotting, and numeric subscript/superscript, as well as Greek letters and mathematical symbols. |
| Display modes | In addition to the TDV 2215 version 2 underline and attribute mode, the display mode can be controlled on a character-by-character basis. 16 display modes are available: Combinations of underline, blink, inverse video, and low intensity. In addition, double-width display and invisible are included. |
Keyboard Characteristics:¶
| Number of keys | 121. |
|---|---|
| Interface | Serial asynchronous communication is used between keyboard and terminal. Communication is bidirectional allowing commands to be sent to the keyboard. |
| Cable | Six-wire coiled flexible cable. |
| Indicators | Nine LEDs are used. Three are programmable and those remaining indicate line interface status. |
| Sound | A bell and click transducer are included. Their operation is controlled by softswitches. |
| Interface | The ND 246 is interfaced to an ND computer via a 20 mA current loop interface or the CCITT V.24 (EIA RS-232 C) standard connection via modems and modem interfaces. A start/stop character format with two stop bits (11 bit code) is used. Parity bit generation and error detection use even parity. Transmission speed is switch selectable from 110 to 9600 baud. |
| Printer control | Start hard copy. Start relay to printer. Stop relay to printer. This allows for hard copy and independent printing (terminal bypass). Transaction logging can be initiated by remote switch setting. |
