CAD Workstation - Technostyle¶

Introduction¶

NORSK DATA offers complete solutions to the manufacturing industry in the CAD/CAM/CIM application area through the TECHNOVISION product family. The wide variety of software products is available on a platform of powerful 32-bit minicomputers, workstations and other related peripherals.

The CAD workstation TECHNOSTYLE uniquely combines design, functionality and ergonomics into a top-of-the-range product for CAD/CAM applications.

Functionality¶

The trinitron monitor offers the best combination of intensity, contrast and colour sharpness in high resolution display of line graphics.

Care has been taken to meet the most demanding standards set by VDE and other industrial regulatory bodies for safety, noise and climatic conditions.

The workstation is also designed to be robust to give long life in heavy use.

Product Description¶

The Technovision product supports a wide range of workstations, each designed to meet specific functional and price/performance requirements. The top-of-the-range product incorporating TECHNOSTYLE combines all the proven technical features of Norsk Data’s CAD workstations with a unique configuration of dialogue and graphic devices into a workplace designed for the professional 'CAD Engineer'.

All devices for system operation are brought together. The normally disparate devices like keyboard, tablet and dialogue monitor are integrated into a single operation unit. This is achieved on the one hand via exploitation of flat screen technology, and on the other by favouring the tablet as the main input device for one-hand operation. The infrequently used keyboard is stored under the tablet in normal use, but is readily accessible when needed.

TECHNOSTYLE is designed to meet the most demanding standards for ergonomics in the working environment. The table, graphic monitor and operation unit can be individually adjusted for height and tilt, allowing the unit to be rapidly adapted to the needs of every one of its users.

Environment¶

TECHNOSTYLE is co-designed by furniture manufacturers to ensure that it fits into modern European design offices, with the emphasis on the needs of its operators and the ambience of its surroundings.

Interfaces¶

ND 9752 can only be used with the TECHNOVISION software family. Each workstation requires two ports on the ND-5000 host. One is for the operation unit (RS232 9600 Baud or 19200 Baud). The other port is for the controller. Depending on the communication speed required, this port should be:

for 19200 Baud: terminal port on ND 102740 interface card.
for 51200 Baud: one port on ND 110016.

Designed for Engineers¶

TECHNOSTYLE is the practical realisation of a design study which involved mechanical engineers, industrial designers, furniture manufacturers and academic research.

Requirements¶

The ideal requirements for a new kind of CAD workstation were analysed by Norsk Data’s own mechanical engineers in close cooperation with a number of our longest standing and most experienced customers. They were asked to specify what they needed in a piece of equipment that they spent up to 50% of their working day using.

Ergonomics¶

The most important factors were considered to be: - Freedom to adjust the elements of the workstation to every individual's needs. - Concentration on the most commonly used elements, e.g. orientation of dialogue unit and tablet to the main screen, with the keyboard playing a secondary role.
