ND 543 MAGTAPE DRIVE 1600-6250 bpi

ND 537 MAGTAPE FORMATTER

ND 560 MAGTAPE CONTROLLER

Introduction

The ND 543 - Magnetic tape drive, the ND 537 Magnetic Tape Formatter, and the ND 560 - Magnetic Tape Controller constitute one of the leading minicomputer tape systems in the market. The formatter and drive are delivered by Storage Technology Corporation, a well reputed producer of computer peripherals.

Features

  • Up to four drives on each controller
  • May be upgraded to 3 densities, 800-1600-6250 bpi
(Upgrade kit for magtape drive: ND 549, upgrade
kit for magtape controller: ND 549)
  • Speed 125 ips
  • In a multiple drive system, the formatter can
    handle a mixture of densities
  • Automatic thread/load for both open reels and
    easy-load cartridges
  • Single vacuum assisted capstan
  • Dual vacuum columns
  • Dual gap READ/WRITE head and full width ERASE head
  • Quick release, positive action file reel hub
  • Vacuum assisted tape cleaner
  • Microprogram controlled tape unit sequencing
    and, diagnostics
  • Resident maintenance controls
  • Power window - automatic closing and opening
    on load and unload operations
  • One drive may rewind without blocking the others
    on the same controller

Product Description

A two-phase digital tachometer in the capstan motor provides precise tape positioning and stop-lock control, at an accuracy of 0.00565 inches.

For speed control, tach pulses are compared to a crystal clock pulse.

In addition to automatic thread/load, extraordinarily accurate tape loading is assured by a minimum length, straightshot, gravity-assisted tape path. Tape acceleration is kept to a minimum by a microsequencer-controlled liner reel servo system.

Tape drag and tape edge damage is minimized by the use of hydrostatic air bearings at all critical points. A hydrostatic rewind foot prevents tape and head wear during high speed rewind. And a unique tape footage counter, in conjunction with the digital tack and microsequencer, smooths tape acceleration and deceleration for faster and gentler rewind.
