ND-5000 ES System Overview¶
The ND-5000 Extended Servers (ES) have been designed to cover a range of computing needs: from small, inexpensive systems for office applications to big tasks like heavy computation, large online transaction-processing systems, electronic mail systems and acting as network gateway administrators. Thus, the series fits ideally into a modern networked solution.
The forces behind "second wave" market demands have been key design considerations for the ND-5000 ES Series: favourable price/performance, ease of use and operation, open to standards, integration with PCs and mainframes and more user control over applications and data.
ND-5000 ES System Models¶
Three model ranges make up the ND-5000 ES Series of super-minicomputers. Designed as a powerful entry-level system, the model S range has just been introduced. The mid-range has been dramatically improved with the model C range, including new backup capabilities and greater capacity and performance. The ND-5000 ES model L range at the high end is the right alternative where environmental considerations, power and growth potential are important.
37 standard configurations are defined in the ND-5000 ES Series, each suited to a particular processing need and each field-upgradable when the need arises.
ND systems are designed to operate in integrated data networks with from one to several hundred active users. Upgrading a system is often a suitable alternative to system replacement. Our business pledge - ND SAFE (Systems Architecture for Expansion) - states that technical development of products shall advance in the best interests of the customer. Software running on current systems will also run on future systems.

Extended Systems Architecture¶
To give the customer greater possibilities than ever before, Norsk Data has expanded its systems architecture to embrace industry-standard PC/AT-compatible workstations, Local Area Networks and servers. While ensuring that the customer gets the most out of existing systems, Norsk Data is adding new capabilities from the UNIX®, MS-DOS™ and OS/2™ worlds.
The ND-5000 ES Series is a vital element in this strategy. It provides the capacity necessary for running large applications and database/transaction-processing systems, as well as acting as a common resource for workstations in high-speed networks. To meet the growing demand for better integration of PCs with corporate computing resources, the ND-5000 ES Series is designed to link workstations together via networks and multiple servers.
Norsk Data's Extended Systems Architecture consists of a tightly integrated PC-workstation/minicomputer concept, where the user gets the best of both worlds: software availability, predictable response times and a friendly graphic user-interface from the PC workstation; and resource sharing, administrative DP integration and communications and coexistence with other vendors from the ND-5000 ES Series.
ND-5000 ES Series provide full support for workstation connection through Ethernet.

Model S Range¶
The ND-5000 ES Model S is a range of office systems that give the customer a new alternative at the lower end. Designed primarily as a departmental system, it accommodates up to 32 active users and has internal disk storage of up to 620 MB. A tape streamer of 155 MB for backup is standard equipment. Used as a communications server, it supports Ethernet and other Local Area Network standards, in addition to Wide Area Networks. The Model S is fully hardware and software-compatible with the rest of the ND-5000 ES Series.

Model C Range¶
Like the Model S range, the ND-5000 ES Model C range is designed to fit into limited office space. An ideal system for a larger department, it accommodates up to 200 local or network users. Maximum internal disk storage is 1.5 GB. A 155 MB backup tape streamer is standard; two backup options include the ND Gigatape System for up to 2.2 GB backup cassettes and a 1600/6250 bpi, 125 ips free-standing magtape. A new cabinet design allows for larger and more flexible configurations with regard to card allocation. Full hardware and software compatibility with the rest of the ND-5000 ES Series is provided, as well as full support of Ethernet/other LAN and WAN communications.

Model L Range¶
The Model L range ranks among the best super-minicomputers on the market, but it is far less taxing on the operational environment. In physical size, power consumption and cooling requirements, the L range is several times less demanding than comparable systems from major international competitors.
Several hundred simultaneous users are supported; 35 gigabytes of external disk can be conveniently accessed. Main memory can be increased to 512 MB. The ND-5900 ES is a multi-processor system with up to four processors. With such growth potential, the customer is not likely to find his system restricted by processing-power limitations.

Applications and Solutions Capability¶
The ND-5000 ES Series runs the hundreds of existing applications already running on Norsk Data systems. In addition to its own software house (ND Application), more than 550 other software houses work with Norsk Data to supply applications for ND systems. A number of complete application packages are delivered where Norsk Data undertakes total system responsibility. These include systems for central and local government administration; printing and publishing; design and production for the mechanical industry; health administration and hospital systems, and systems for the energy and oil-related industries.
Helping customers to become more efficient and competitive in their own business is our goal at Norsk Data. This is why about 60 percent of the total staff have direct contact with customers. In addition to the products themselves, Norsk Data provides system requirement analysis, consultancy, training and a full program of maintenance and support.
