Introduction¶

The ND matrix printer fits well into the modern office environment. It is light, simple to master, easy to operate and very flexible. It may be connected to the display terminals: ND 11000C Black-on-White terminal, ND 103200 NOTIS Terminal, ND 103190 TWIST terminal and ND 110007 Colour terminal.

Product Description¶

The LX-86 prints on a 9 x 9 dot matrix in draft mode. It has the capacity to print 96 ASCII characters with lowercase descenders, and 64 graphics characters. The easily replaceable 9-wire print head has an estimated life of 100,000,000 characters. Print speed is 100 characters per second (cps) in draft mode bidirectional printing. The print ribbon is encased in a cartridge which is easy to remove.

External features include a manual paper-knob, a power switch, a V.24 or Centronics interface, three control buttons and four indicator LEDs (light emitting diodes). Additionally, the LX-86 has a tractor-feed mechanism and can use three-ply paper (original plus 2 copies).

The "On line" control button toggles the printer between on line and offline modes. The "FF" (form feed) button advances the paper by one form; that is, one page length. The "LF" (line feed) button advances the paper by one line. The distance the paper advances may be changed under software control. The latter two control buttons are functional only when the printer is offline. A self-test mode may be activated by turning the printer on while pressing the "LF" button; in this mode all characters provided by internal software are repeatedly printed out to test the operation of the print head, ribbon guide and motor mechanism.

The four LEDs indicate "Power," "Ready," "Paper out" and "On line." A software-controllable buzzer is located inside the printer case; it is activated by a switch on the paper guide when the printer runs out of paper.

The LX-86 is an intelligent printer, incorporating its own microprocessor. The microprocessor coordinates the internal logic and controls the two precision-stepper motors. One motor moves the print head, the other advances the paper. The microprocessor moves the print head from its present location to the next via the shortest distance. This feature, combined with the bidirectional printing capacity, constitutes the logical-seeking function. The result is an increase in printing speed and a reduction of head wear due to the minimisation of head travel.

The user may select one of six character pitches under software control. These are: 5.0, 6.0, 8.5, 10.0, 12.0 or 17.1 cpi. This allows for 40, 48, 68, 80, 96 or 137 characters on a line, respectively. Line spacing (the distance the paper advances when a linefeed code is transmitted) has a default value of 0.423 cm. It may be set from 0.035 cm to 3.00 cm, in increments of 0.035 cm. (0.035 is the distance between two wires on the print head.)

The number of lines per form (page) has a default value of 72, and may be set at any whole number between 1 and 127. The user may specify up to 64 vertical tabs per form, and up to 112 horizontal tabs per line.

In the emphasised character mode and the boldface mode, each character is printed twice. In the latter mode however, the paper is advanced 0.0118 cm before the overprinting. The printing speed is reduced to between 25 and 60 cps in these modes.

Self Test Mode¶

Pressing the Line-Feed switch while turning power ON engages a self-test that prints all characters in ROM in draft mode. Pressing the Form-Feed switch prints all characters in NLQ mode.
